how well would a 22t, 24t, or 26t pinion work?

Delta_Ice 02-27-2012 08:43 PM

Cool, wasn't sure how much it was gonna run me as it seems everything I look at for this truck either nickel and dimes you or wants a huge chunk of the monthly pie...freakin mamba at the hobby store keeps calling my name....

also would it be worth spending the extra few dollars and buy an aluminum spur gear?

Brent and I are both running the 22 rear springs on the front and rear of our SC10. I started with silver up front and grey rear. Switched to yellow in the rear. Gonna try orange up front tomorrow. It seems the rear 22 springs translate pretty close to the AE rear spring rates, but when running the 22 rear springs on the front of an SC10, it is a little off. I was running ae blue fronts and ae green rear, which would be close to losi black or blue for the front, and losi White or yellow for the rear. But the front was way to stiff and had way too much spring/lift with anything higher than losi silver. I like losi yellow in the back a lot. Now just gotta find the right spring for the front. Might have to pick up some 22T front springs.

I never had problems with spur gears stripping. What pinion/spur gears do you have and are you racing or bashing ?

darryl80 02-28-2012 06:14 AM

i have pinion gears in the range of 18t-26t.

Cain 02-28-2012 06:50 AM

the stock plastic spur gears are fine. You will just be destroying your pinion and / or spur gear if you go with an alloy as I doubt the pinions you have are hardened for that kind of usage, and, its unecessary.

When you go with that 3800, just make sure that you have it setup on the ESC with some punch control and have your slipper set properly. That can help save your drivetrain.

I'm running 22/84 with my cc 3800kv and it's too fast for my track. I'm going to turn down torque to 70% and see if that will help. I'm 1/4 throttle my whole track except for the triples. That is 1/2 throttle and I over jump it. I just want more throttle control.

I wouldn't bother with the aluminum spur. The plastic should work a long time and is cheap to replace when you need too.

darryl80 02-28-2012 07:17 AM

would it be a good idea to buy 4 or 5 plastic spur gears to have them on hand?

I keep 2 of each tooth size on hand. Just in case I have to Change spur sizes, I will have an extra if I don't get the mesh correct.

darryl80 02-28-2012 07:32 AM

what about keeping 78t, 75t, 81t, 87t, 84t spur gears oh hand? would i be well set?

CHIZZLE 02-28-2012 07:36 AM

You're gonna want a bigger collection of pinions rather than spurs.

Cain 02-28-2012 07:36 AM

I personally don't think you need that much variety in sizes for the type of motors you are planning to run darryl. With the castle setup you have, and the fact we run full on mod out here, the 84T and 87T probably would be your best choices for spur gears.

darryl80 02-28-2012 07:37 AM

i will be buying pinions too. i have some sc10 2wd pinions on hand. so i will also be buying pinions.

Hey Guys. Just getting back into rc cars after a 3 year lull while flying 3d planes. I unloaded most my stuff to pay for plane stuff, but I still have an 8ight that's been collecting dust and cat hair. Anyhow, to the point. I just bought a new 8ight 2.0........and more to the point, an AE SC10 Factory Team with Mamba Max Pro, an LRP X12 17.5, Hitec HS-7985MG and a couple of Gens Ace 2S 5000mah 30c packs to run in the stock class, so I can get back into the swing of racing. So the I was just reading through the discussion of gearing, and wanted to get a recommendation for the above setup. The track I'll run on is fairly technical with very few straightaways, with the longest being about 50 feet. I'm just looking for a good starting point. This info may be in the manual.....but I my kit has not gotten here yet...and if so, I apologize....but Kinda want to have all this ready for when I get it. thanks.
