Just purchased a SC10 for my grandson, does anyone have a starting setup for West Coast RC. He's only 7 and I just need for him to be able to get the truck around the course. I currently have the kit setup on the truck. I race onroad and no nothing about setting up an off road truck.

Is it an RTR SC10 or a FT RC10? If it's an RTR, I would think getting a good set of rear tires (whatever the hot ticket is at that track) and the FT rear arm mounts would be a good start. Crank in quite a bit of rear toe with the FT arm mounts, and combined with the grippier rear tires, he should be spinning out less. I'd concentrate on getting a truck that has plenty of rear grip, and focus on getting the steering back as he gets to be a better driver. Making sure there's 2-3° of front toe in will help the truck be stable on the straights, too. The RPM front bumper might not be a bad idea, either:D:D:D
So much of racing is staying calm and driving smoothly. With a 7 year old, at least with mine, the attention span is rather short, and it takes a bit of coaching to keep him calm and concentrating on driving. Preaching the "slower is faster" sermon seems to help, too. My kid is almost too cautious with the throttle. Helping him remember to actually watch in front of the car instead of focusing right on the car is big at that age, too. Etc., etc. etc. |

I had all of the electronics. I figured I would get the FT kit just in case he likes it and wants to race, and if he didn't I would have an opportunity to race a little off road |

Hey Everyone! I always wanted an RC10T when I was a kid. Now I'm 31 and just bought a SC10 FT and am about to build. Any advice?
Also, I'm sure this has been answered millions of times in these threads but whats a good Motor/ESC Combo? I don't mind spending a little extra for something good. I've been reading alot of these threads and there is so much info out there. TOO MUCH Info. It seems to me that the Castle Creations is very popular (because of price), but is the Novak system better? I'm new to this but I'm not looking to "Bash", I want a good setup and try racing. Thanks! |

The Castle SCT combo is very solid and priced right. If it was me and price wasnt to big of an issue, I would get a tekin RS speedo and whatever motor to suit for the rules at your track. This speedo allows you to run mod, stock, no timing 17.5 class, etc. Not to mention one of the most reliable, tuneable speedos out there. They can be had for around $150 or so new from tower hobbies with the $25 off coupon on there front page. I personally have not had very good experiences with lrp or novak stuff lately. There older stuff (gtb, sphere, etc) worked great. Never a problem with my tekin stuff. As far as setup, the FT setup out of the manual is a pretty solid place to start or the popular Scott brown setup on the AE website is also a very good starting point. |
what was said ubove, see what they run no boost esc or all open.i use a tekin and a 13 or 10.5 boosted but all i run is open sct

Some people recommend picking up the RPM bumper for the added brace it gives the front of your chassis, basically making it bulletproof.
Other than that, I'm using the 0 deg aluminum hubs (need a new crush tube and outer bearing if you do this) and RPM long shank (with the notch) ball cups (or as they call them, rod ends). For motors, the Ballistic Spec from Novak has been great and that's what most of the locals use in our 17.5 class. They also have 8.5/10.5/13.5 if you choose to go Mod class. Speedo, either the Tekin RS or the LRP SXX (try to pick up a V1, I hear they are more reliable than the new V2s). The Tekin has reverse, the LRP is forward/brake only. Grats on the truck. |

Save yourself some hassle, money, and time ... Buy good stuff to begin with, even if it means you are out of the game for a month or two while you are saving. Don't go cheap on - Servo, ESC, Motor. also .. i would recommend that you not spend the money on a motor yet until you have decided what class you plan on running and what your local tracks rules are. |

I would argue that even if price is an issue you should get the Tekin RS or another mid to high end ESC. Nothing is worse then buy a motor / esc right now "because its in your budget" just to find out that you have to upgrade to something better, or with more options; forcing you to sell your original investment online for 1/2 the price. That causes the cost of the 2nd device to be artificially inflated.

He's already off to a good start by getting the FT instead of one of the RTR variations. Tekin RS is my recommendation as well, but some say LRP speedos are smoother. I'd go for reliability though, and Tekin's customer service is top notch from my experience. Also, get the right servo the first time around. Either the Spektrum S6040 or Savox 1258. |

I agree mostly about the above statement, yes it is good to buy top of the line gear right off the bat if you have the cash and or are going to race often (somewhat seriously). But, if a guy is on a budget or isnt going to race all that often or just having fun racing with buddies, there are other good cheaper systems out there. There are guys around me that have fun racing with buddies and a occasional club race that use hobbywing, castle, etc and works just fine. There are other reliable systems out there other then tekin, but Tekin is still my number 1 choice if i had to recommend one. Another thing to add when building the sc10 is to follow the build and break in instructions for the ball diff that is stickied on the top of the off-road forum. If the diff is not built correctly or broke in correctly, the diff will feel like crap after a few runs. The diff will last much longer between rebuilds if you follow the break in process. |
Cool,
So the Tekin RS ESC, and Spektrum S6040 or Savox 1258 Servo's. Thanks guys. I'm sure there are other ESC's that are good, but I'm looking for something with little chance of having issues. I'm reading about the Castle Creations not being able to handle SC truck's demands (mostly the Sidewinder). I'll have to check the track on motor rules. Is there kind of a standard with what motors are usually accepted? |

Any turn motor for Mod Check your track and see what has the best turn out. You will hate yourself if you buy a stock motor but there is no one else racing it, then you'll end up running with the big boys with a motor that is far slower. |
