Who has converted their T4 into one?

highvoltage 03-10-2010 07:12 AM

I understand the chassis is a little shorter..

I specifically baught a T4 Factory team to covert to an SC10. I first built the T4 kit and raced if a few times and set out to covert it. No issues at all with the conversion. I purchased a chassis, front and rear bumper/body mounts on eBay and picked up some Proline Split Six bead locks with CaliberSC M3 tires. My JConcepts Slash body fit OK with some trimming for the rear bumper and new front body mount holes. I love this truck and the Factory Team options have helped me get the weight down to the ROAR legal weight limit. I think I am about 35gms overweight with my ROAR approved battery.

Total cost to covert = $53 off e-bay including shipping ($90 retail). $70 for tires and wheels.

Stock FT Parts that you have to add if you start with the RTR or Kit SC10 to match the T4 FT:
1) FT Ti Turnbuckles
2) FT Shocks
3) FT MIP Ball Diff
4) FT MIP CVD
5) FT Carbon front and rear arms
6) FT Carbon front top plate
7) FT Carbon rear tower brace
8) FT Motor Mount
9) Steering Linkage bearings
10) FT Servo mount
11) FT Servo Saver Bolt
12) FT Aluminum Front pin brace
I think retail for all of these upgrades is around $240.

I added STRC 1deg rear hubs and beadlock rings as well as AE 30 deg caster blocks for performance. I also changed the shock caps to the FT bleed screw caps. My shocks are smooth as butter and match perfectly now.

The SC10 is 35mm longer than a T4 but the rest of the dimensions match the ROAR specs. I have removed the SC10 battery brace and installed a velcro strap sloting the reciever wire spaces a little with my dremel. Works great with my ESC mounted in the back of the battery tray.

So to Create a Factory Team SC10 at retail prices without shipping it would be:

Starting with the T4 FT
- RC10T4 FT = $240
- SC10 conversion parts = $90
- SCT Body = $40
- SCT tires = $70
total conversion = $440

Starting with an SC10
- SC10 kit = $180
- FT Parts = $240
- SCT tires = $35 --> for racing the stock tires are not the best
Total Conversion = $465

Pick your desired method. I like having the T4 parts if I ever wanted to switch back. I do have a T4 FT carbon chassis, FT Carbon shock towers, tires, and a body that I can sell. Starting with the SC10 kit would leave you with only tires left over with my plan. I have had to change tires once already so I am happy I chose to get the bead locks. With the STRC aluminum beadlock rings my wheels are nearly the same weight as the stock wheels.

If you use a T4 to convert notice that the sc10 comes with b4 front axles and using the t4 front axles may push its width past roar specs.

You are correct that the SC10 and B4 have common front spindles. I baught the FT Aluminum B4 spindles. The difference is the length of the shank. I was using washers outside of the bearings until I got the new spindles. The width was the same since the stop on the spindle is in the same spot.

I forgot that part, thanks.

The cost of the FT Aluminum Spindles is around $14 and would put the T4FT conversion equal with a SC10 conversion to FT. That is interesting!! At retail prices it would not make sence to convert a T4 but since I purchased my base parts off e-bay it was very cost effective.

I also converted my FT T4. I'm running all JConcepts stuff so that's one reason I did it. I would have bought a new body and wheels/tires no matter what. But you do have to buy quite a few parts unless you want to mod/cob some of it. There are some small things needed that get overlooked, stuff like the rear motor guard and front tower that you really need to do it right. It's not just chassis, body mounts, and f/r bumper assemblies.

IMO most of the FT parts are irrelevant for an SC10. The front end is better off with all GT2 stuff. The chassis and towers should just be replaced with SC10 parts, and even if you mod the T4 ones to work, it won't make a difference in performance in this truck, imo.

I do like keeping the T4 ball diff, shocks, cvds...

I also skipped the SC10 battery hold down, and made my own quick release hold down.

Bottom line is that it's not cost effective, unless you get parts at a big discount. I got a pretty good deal on mine too. Even if you already have a T4, it's barely worth it. If I did it over, I would have bought a SC10 kit, and swapped out anything I wanted from my T4 like the shocks... then sell off the T4. You should come out ahead if you sell the old truck, even for like $50... and it will be much easier.

I may have made the parts swap seem to simple. The parts I changed were:

A-Associated SC10 Chassis
A-Associated SC10 Nerf Bars
A-Associated SC10 Battery Strap Kit
B-Associated SC10 Front Skid Plate & Bumper
C-Associated SC10 Rear Bumper and Brace
C-Associated SC8 Mud Flaps
D-Associated SC10 Front Shock Tower
D-Associated SC10 Rear Shock Tower
D-Associated SC10 Front/Rear Body Mounts
D-Associated Body Posts

Since I went to e-Bay were many people are tearing down SC10 kits and selling the parts for profit I was able to get key parts bundled together. The Chassis assembly (A), Front bumper mount and bumper(B), rear bumper mount, bumper, and mud flaps (C), and the shock towers/body mounts(D). The only item that I had to get from my LHS was some screws such as the longer upper shock bolts and the front spindles.

I didn't have another AE model to start with. I went with the T4 cause I was planning to get a Ball DIF, Shocks, CVDs, and upgraded steering. The cost for the parts was $120 retail on top of the SC10 kit at $180. $300 for a SC10 based roller or $330 for a full FT upgrade. Since I saved $40 on the SC10 parts it was a wash.

On the SC10 forum at RC10.com they have the complete part list buy AE part number down to every screw, nut and washer.

Is the ball diff worth getting (MIP) or just leave it stock? I have two stock diff's a run a 2k filled for indoor offroad on the carpet, and a grease packed for outdoor racing. The ball diff I was considering for this summer for outdoor racing. Please only comment if you have tried both, Thanks!!

If you have a ball diff run it. Its more consistent than the gear diff.

Gary O'Briens setup on AEs website is a good place to start. It was a stock setup but it'll work.

Somebody needs to talk ThunderbirdJunkie out of buying the Split Six beadlocks.

Tired of waiting for PL to release a 1 piece wheel, and tired of the wobbly crap Jconcepts ruluxes that are on there now.
