I've actually heard some good things about the butane irons but haven't used one myself in probably 20 years. I personally rarely take the motor out of my SCTE. I prefer to blow it out with compressed air in the vehicle. Every once in a while I'll disassemble and get all the bearings cleaned and re-oiled but that doesn't happen much. Makes the plugs not very necessary.

I would not recommend using any type of connectors in between the ESC and Motor. You are just looking for problems to show up. Get a good soldering iron and watch some videos and get good at it. Having soldering skills is a big part of RC racing.

Speaking of soldering....I recently got a Hakko FX888D and was wondering what tip to get for applications like the leads on the VTX8 or on one of the big 1/8 scale or 550 size motors. I was thinking of something like this....

I'm trying to "unsolder" the stock wires on my new vtx8 and I'm having a really hard time. I'm using a hakko fx888 with the temp cranked to the max. I know how to solder but the stock wires just don't want to come loose. I don't know what kind of magical solder they use but has anyone else encountered this problem?

What tip are you using? If it's the wrong tip it probably isn't gonna get the job done. The tip that comes with it isn't even close. I just hit one of the other guys on here up about that and he suggested a 5.2mm tip at 625°.

Butane irons are the cat's meow. As an automotive tech, Its much easier to use under dashes than wired irons. I personally use a portasol 75w equivalent iron. Other guys use Snap ons at 3x the price, also made by portasol.

Yea I'm using the tip that came with it. The larger one that looks like a flathead screwdriver. Can you post a link to a better tip please?

the butane irons are nice as I have a matco one. But for soldering in this hobby your gonna need something better. I would invest in the hakko 936 or the trackpower station, I have the trackpower and it is awesome. The butanes will work but they take longer to melt the solder and I dont like leaving my tip on my electronics but for a second or so.
