Depends are you looking for something economy based - Copperhead/VX4.39 (3900kv) will save you some bucks but still have big time torque. If looking for a little more all out speed. VTX10/VST combo - maybe stay around a 13.5 or 10.5 unless your going racing - then see what the tracks rules are. If you want to go crazy you can a lower turn motor. But remember:
With great power, comes great responsibility - the chance to brake something, and spend even more money......

kind of bummed out with my viper motor..
its a 8.5t Im running it my factory team sc10 and its just slow. if I gear it up to where its almost as fast as my friends sc10 with the same motor, it gets really hot 160*+
its the second one I've had. i sent my old one in and recieved a replacement.
did I get one from a bad batch? I love the smoothness, but I hate to say im shopping around for a different brand..
any advice?

Here is my setup that I have used most recently with it. Maybe try these settings and gearing (the 1.295:1 Final Drive Ratio, also called "Roll Out")

Temperature is something to be concerned with - but it's only a concern if it gets extreme. If it gets to 160, 170 after one run. It's not always a horrible thing. If its 180-190, you might see a loss in performance towards the end of the run (slows down- cant clear some jumps). I've run motors hotter, at a big event to try and etma good result. But you have to keep in mind, if you do it consistently, it will shorten the life of the motor. So as the owner of the product it becomes your choice, should I push the temperature or not. If your motor comes off the track at 160, 165, 170 - it doesn't mean there is a problem with the motor. Unless its that hot and running really really slow.

Would that be a good setup for a shortcourse truck?

In a 4 wheel, that one shown would be great. There are three different models of the Copperhead. In 2wd, look at the 3900kv system, 6VSVX43901. In 4wd, look at the other two systems, the 4500kv or the 5150kv systems.

I'm not runnng a viper esc. just the viper motor. I did have it on amd older lrp esc and it was worse. now I'm using a loaner novac havoc. a little better but still slow. the esc is cranked up as hardcore as it can go. I've never messed with motor timing. should I try that?
