I think the grove in the chassis is not a bad idea but I would mill the channel all the way to the end of the rib. Otherwise there is a tendency to trap small pebble at the end of the channel ... me thinks anyways.

Well, the belt rubbing only goes to show that the belt is pretty loose now and that I'm cheap !
I'm now tightening it up a notch from stock.

I took a look at the car last night and you're right that there are less chances for pebbles to get trapped inside when there's hardly any space due to the front belt's close distance to the chassis.
