Orion questions.

Pitpop,

Congratulation with the great success in the IFMAR worlds!

I use the 3 port CRF Alpha ABI engine in my MP9 SE car with 14T clutch bell and so far quite happy with it at my local track. I use a 2057 pipe, but will try out with the new Orion 2058 pipe when I can get a hold of it.

I have also two brand new engines waiting, one new CRF Alpha 3 port and one new CRF Alpha ABI 7 port. I havent bought the world champion 5 port motor yet :)

I have a few questions:

1. Do you think that Orion will at some point in the future coat their crankshafts to reduce wear and improve performance? That could prolong the life of the crankshaft pin so that one could only focus on changing the conrod on regular basis.

2. Is an operation temperature of 110 - 116 degree Celsius OK for the 3 port CRF Alpha? This is what I have now with Byron 25/11 fuel. By the way, is it okay also to try out 25/9 or will this reduce engine life with respect to p/s/r?

3. Are the motors that you are using factory tuned, like Novarossi does, or fairly the same as we ordinary customers use :)

Best regards
Kai

So Cody was running the Orion CRF Alpha 5port. Is this engine available? I only see the 3 port or 7 port.

Does anyone know?

5 port at Horizon Hobby

Hi,

Look at the Orion Engine pages at horizonhobby.com

You will find the 5 port CRF ALpha ABI motor there.

ironpeddler 11-17-2010 08:17 AM

The 2058 pipe is not available yet, correct?

the 2058 pipe is available, but it comes with an on-road header, you will need an off-road head pipe

Hi Kai. Thank you very much.

I think the crank shaft for off-road is better without coating. If you put a VERY THIN coat of grease on the pin before installing the clutch it will last much longer with very minimal wear or discoloring. I always do this.

The temp range you described is perfect for ambient temp around 30 degrees. A little lower probably if the temp outside is cooler. 25/9 will be fine. 11% oil is really too much, but if you are beginner or not right on the tune all the time, 11% might be better.

We run very standard engines, and sometimes run them right out of the box on purpose for testing. Of course for Worlds we are testing the newest developments and then release after the race...

Welcome back PitPop, and congrats to you and Cody..

Speaking of engines, brings up a question, that was asked but never asked. What engine were you all running in Pattaya, 3 port, 5port, or 7port?

Orion engines.

Dear Pitpop,

Thank you very much for your kind answers.

It was good to know that Orion will bring the best engines to the ordinary customer and that the factory teams contributes to development and testing. That is very important!

I will start using Byron 25/9. It does also cost less than Byron 25/11.

With respect to the coating, I was mostly thinking of the pin on the crankshaft where the conrod is connected to it as this can wear down and getting out of acceptable tolerances so that it might be necessary to buy both a new crankshaft and the connecting rod to avoid excess play. Of course if this pin is made out of very solid material without any hard coating then it is very much OK as it is I guess. My Orion 3 port is still fine, but I am thinking on future engine maintenance. Orion engine parts are quite expensive :)

Best Regards
Kai

He ran the 5 port with the 2058 pipe. This was stated in thia thread and anothere i think. Jared ran the 7 port at the roar 2010 nats.

Hi Pitpop,

thank you for all the informations you give us regularly, regarding to the engines and MP9 and Grats to your incredible victory!

Why do you think coatings don't make such a sense in off-road?

What would be theoretically the best operating temps for the actual race eingines: 3- & 5-port-CRF-Orions?

May you give us please some informations about the special 'works-engines'? The crankcases were made by sandcasting, aren't they?

Many thanks
Wolf

PITPOP- I am running the Orion Alpha 3 port along with a jp-4 pipe! I am only getting around 7 mins out of a tank and I think it should be more. Still trying to figure these engines out. I am in texas and my temp is usually around 248 or so, but most are telling me on these engines, normal temps are around 270?? What kind of needle settings are you guys using? Also I am experimenting with my EPA's to try and get a lil more mileage! Other than that, the engines are a beast on power!!
