basically what ScottyM is saying is true, you want to turn down the epa when you put a smaller restrictor... if the slide opens all the way up when you have a smaller restrictor it causes the speed of the intake air to be elevated, causing all sorts of strange tuning and sometimes elevated temps... this also can cause turbulence and chaos as the mixture enters the crank... if you reduce the epa, it reduces the velocity of the air coming through the carb insert, reduces the turbulence and resulting ill mannered behavior, and should increase mileage...

you can also just reduce the epa, which should increase mileage and reduce power, but it might be less consistent than the restrictor method.

It is nice to know why you shouldn't set EPA beyond the restrictor. I had just always been told not to, but never knew why.. Thanks Paul..

That's a great engine! It has the old style composite carburetor, so I would go through it with a fine tooth comb. Grease all the o-rings and just seal it up well (including the ones in the body). If you haven't done this, have an experienced engine guy do this for you. It makes a big difference.

2013 pipe better... this might be my favorite engine of all time. :)

Hi Pitpop,

do you suggest additional sealing(which one?) for the newer carbs too or is it just right to grease all o-rings?

Many thanks
Wolf

Yes, I absolutely recommend greasing all the o-rings, seal the rubber boot, and make sure banjo fitting is sealed. Your carburetor and engine will be happier this way. It's so nice to have accurate tune and idle laying down in the corners. ;)

Orion Alpha with standard burn room - a couple of questions

Hi,

I was at my local hobby store yesterday and could not resist buying the Orion Alpha (Non ABI) engine that uses a standard glow plug.

The engine has an aluminium carburator.

This engine has the same piston and cylinder as the Alpha ABI 3.5 engine :)

The quality of the engine looks to be excellent and to a great price!

It will be interesting to compare it to the Alpha 3 port CRF.

Question 1: Is there a power gain to install the turbo burn room in the engine or should I just try it right from the box?

Question 2: I have 3 different pipes to choose from, Orion 2057, Orion CRF 2066 and Orion 2013. Which one will give best performance?

Best Regards
Kai

Turbo button is not really necessary. It does burn a little more efficiently because the seal is better between plug and button. 2013 pipe, hands down.

Orion Alpha 3.5

Thanks,

I will try the 2013 pipe and engine out of the box.

Best Regards
Kai

good choice :) just FYI, we used to run the MC-9 with standard button engine, seemed to work real nice

do the orion's like a lean or fat bottom? 5 count or 10 count on the bog test?

I usually like 3 count, 2 or less is too lean, 5 is too much... 10 is way too much ;)

Orion Alpha - Standard Plug

The Real Mc COY Cold - MC-9

Thanks for the advice :)

Best Regards
Kai
