Tested a Viper 1400 kv 1/8th scale motor in my S811-e last week. Started with the same gearing as my Tekin T8 1400 (44/17) and ran a battery through it. Running 6S 3300 lipo. Power felt Ok, but the motor came off the track at 196 deg F, where my Tekin is usually ~150. Nice most Viper motors seem like they need geared up a bit, I went up to 44/19 and ran again. Power felt better, and temps were down a bit, to 182 deg F. Still too hot. Liking the Tekin better so far. How should the motor be geared?

Well gearing between a 4 pole and 2 pole motor is always different and so is the motor timing.
A few questions for Viper here:
Why not gone with a sensored slotless 2 pole design?
Offerings of bigger rotors?

What is the highest you can set the thermal cut offs while still being safe.
I am running the viper 6.5 combo and pretty much left everything stock in race mode. Cut offs were set at 180 motor and 220 esc and after 6-7 min the car just cut out but it still had steering. I temped the motor and it read 151, the esc read 162.
The car is 4wd 10th scale kyosho lazer fs2 with 17/78 gearing 2.5 ratio so a fdr of 11.4ish. Any recomendations? The motor has more than enough punch so i can just run it with in the zero timing modes without a problem.
I am more worried about esc temps, so would running race stock lower temps?

You can move the temps up some. Highest setting is 270º for both. I run mine anywhere between 220º-240º depending on car, outside temp, etc. Remember the setting is measuring the internal temp of the motor or esc, not the outside temp on the heatsink. If you were getting those temps outside - bump up the settings a little, you shouldn't see a difference in temp after a run, unless you run 8-9 minutes instead of 6-7. I use the Mod no boost profile in my 4wd and the only issue I have had is too much power than I can handle.

Ok I cannot get the temps down. I set both esc/motor to 230 as recommended on here and the motor still thermals on the 17 pinion after 9-10 min. Tried a 15 and it lasted 12 min. Tried a 19 and it lasted 8. There is no way I should be geared lower then 15/78, hell I dont even think I can get the gears to mesh. The buggy is stupid fast. At 19/78 I had to turn my travel to 75 of 150 on my spectrum dx3r pro. On 15/78 it ran 85 percent.
At this point im a little puzzled as many others run the same buggies. One guy has a 5.5 and runs the 17/78 combo. Another guys has a 10.5 and runs 19/78, both of them could go the whole battery pack, while I will be lucky to get through the 8 min A main? Do I really need to go to a 13 tooth and try to make it mesh or does the 6.5 combo not work as well as advertised?

indoor clay track? I have only got my esc over 100 once but i only have a 10.5. I also know i geared up my car once and had cooler temps with the motor motor
I'm sure one of the viper reps will come on soon and help you out.

It an indoor clay track with a ton of traction if you stay in the groove. I am seriously at a loss, I am almost inclined to believe the esc cannot handle a 6.5 motor, however if that was the case they wouldnt be selling them as combos

I'm ready to purchase the Viper VTX10 ESC and 13.5 motor and Progauge
I have a question on seutp. I see the ESC comes with 8 preconfigured setups. If I use the Pro Gauge to make a custom setup can I switch back and forth between this custom setting and one of the preconfigured setups by using the buttons on the ESC (switch)?

What profile is your esc on? You need to post all ur settings , so we can see where. u are at, drop your can timing 5-8 degrees and try that , your throttle frequency can also play a part hv temp
