Hey Nick - you raise a really good point here. How does one go about tuning their ESC and Motor combination for the track?

E.g. I was on a 7.5 and my mates were on 10.5 and my car was really edgy and super punchy; it was almost undrivable. I also have an AE B5 - with a 10.5 motor, it was so graceful around the track but with a 7.5 it became a lot more slippery.

I can't help but think if I knew what I should be changing on my ESC and motor timing, I could help myself out a bit. Ideally would still like the responsiveness in the trigger finger, but at the same time for the punch to be a bit lower so as I came up on the throttle, it wasn't causing the rear tires to lose traction.

Was a bit difficult on an LRP X20, when the timing is changed by inserts and 27.5 degrees is the lowest! I've changed motor for now

In your case - guess your using VTX10 or 10R -- There is actually a Punch setting under Throttle. Lowering Punch is kind of like traction control - it will help keep the wheels from spinning if you get on the throttle too hard. But you still get top speed at the top end. Also you can reduce Forward Power under the Misc Tab. This will limit overall power to the motor to slow it down - make it more controllable. Try one step at a time and don't be afraid to try big switch like 15-20 points to really feel the difference. That's what testing is all about.

alright got a question for the viper crew.

has anyone noticed an issue where the chimes that the VTX8 makes stops? Curious if that is a sign of anything to watch for in general.

Also, anyone using a Futaba FHSS receiver and an Xpert servo with a VTX8, one of the higher voltage brushless ones, please shoot me a pm as I have a question for you.

From what I understand, any noise made by the ESC is made by pulsing the motor. So I suppose it's possible that there is a problem with the connection to the motor or the motor itself could be damaged? I think you still get the tones even if the sensor wire is unplugged so I don't think that is it (check it anyway....I'm old and forgetful).

Any issue running a vtx10be in a dex410 with either a 9.5 or 13.5? Brand new to the 4wd world. Thanks.

I have a question I have a vtx10 and was running a 13.5 in the factory 13.5 boosted profile in my b4.2 and it ran pretty good but everyone else is running 7.5's & 8.5's so I put my 8.5 in & tried it on the non boosted profile and the 8.5 is not as fast as the 13.5 tried the 8.5 in the 13.5 boosted profile and it is a little better and I have the timing turned up on the 8.5 any ideas what I need to do.

You should tell us what boost settings you are using and what gearing you are running for both the 13.5 and the 8.5. Also, what type and size of track you are running on.

You will need to gear the two motors significantly differently. I've never run a 13.5 before and it's been a while since I ran an 8.5 buggy but you should use the gearing chart for the B4.2 as a reference point just to get started. I end up gearing to temp and feel. If they are both Viper motors you could probably go up a tooth or two in pinion from whats on the chart. Anyone else run either of these combos want to chime in?

On a related note, do you feel like you need more power? If you are a relatively new racer and the fast guys are blowing you away on the straight, don't fret it until you can run good consistent laps without crashing. Races aren't lost of the straights, they are lost in the corners.

Sorry guys - couple days without wifi slowed me down some:

Tas4 - you should be quicker with a 8.5 than a boosted 13.5 -- I have seen pro drivers gear 81/23 with 7.5, so might need another tooth on pinion. Also is the motor new or is it old. If its an older motor, rotor may have lost some of its magnetic power. Also check your esc settings - default should be pretty close in Profile 2 - maybe adjust Punch depending on traction and driving style.

Cain - noise is actually generated by the motor. Any issue on motor or with connection can cause noise not to happen. Looking into the other things as well will email you about it later.

nordfink - VTX10 is good down to 6.5, in a 4wd car a 9.5 or 13.5 would be ok - would be extremely careful if you try and use boost that could be little tricky if not set up right.

Default vf8 motor

Today, i had a chance to try my 1900kv on my xt8 truggy. i mate motor with sct pro esc and gear ratio was 18/44. i am using 50k silicone oil on center diff. i drove it on little rough grass surface. Car performed very well but power delivery was much smoother. i was using 1515 2200kv castle motor with rx8 esc and16t pinion and vf8 gives me same punch. very impressed. however, motor temperature was 185 degree fahreneit which is 24 degree more then the castle motor. Overall, i am happy with that. i will probably buy another xt8 and put this setup to use it with my brother. i will upload a video of first use as soon as possible.
