Eper, how hot are you getting? I'm not familiar with Kyosho gear ratios. Are you maybe getting a lot of wheel spin that is driving the temp up? You can't raise the spur...can you lower the pinion? I can't remember if you were the one we talked to about this before...you could try raising the throttle frequency to 16K. That should cool down the motor but might heat up the ESC a little.

Hey nick. Im running the vtx10r be and a 7.5 in my scr and geared at 17/82. Still running hot any ideas. Drive train is as free as it gets and i turned down the timing in the motor.
I ran 19/84, which is a 11.494 you are running a 12.541 I would try the 19 for a few minutes and see if your temps go up or down. If you aren't hitting the power band, you can be over revving the motor. Timing should be around 30 deg. 18/82 = 11.844 19/82 = 11.221 |

Thanks everyone for the help. Im going to go with what bob said and try going up on pinion for a few minutes.

If the temps were low and it cut off, it hit voltage cut off, due to a spike for some reason. Look at settings, try and lower punch a couple of points and see if that helps resolve it, because of less current to pass through the system.

Two Dead ESCs?

I think I may have two dead escs... Copperhead R - ran about 4 packs through it with no problems, excellent performance, happy happy! Decided to take car (4x4 Slash w/2800 Tacon motor, stock Traxxas servo, and Futaba r6033ff/4pks rx/tx) over to friends house to demo for kids, dads, etc. The car ran fine for a few minutes then suddenly died. A characteristic tiny puff of smoke came out of the speedo. The only setting I changed, via my new Proguage that came with the VTX10R, was the motor direction so that I could connect the Tacon in a normal ABC configuration. Previously, the motor had to be run with the wires switched so that the motor could run normally. Incidentally, I changed this setting before the demo in which the esc apparently died... VTX10R/VST 10.5 combo - Initial set up. Wires soldered correctly (no overheating), no issues with installation into car (Associated SC10B.2 FT, ProTek 150ss, Futaba r603fs/4pks). Did initial rx/tx calibration but throttle/brakes were reversed, so I changed REV setting on the tx (I had to do the same thing with the Copperhead, btw.) I powered down everything and recalibrated again. The motor ran, but only in reverse. I switched tx setting again, powered down and recalibrated, but this time the motor ran forward for a few seconds then the system shut down. I disconnected the battery and checked its power levels - OK. Reconnected battery, powered up the esc and tried the same - power shut off after only a few seconds. The only sign that the esc wasn't fried was there was no smoke or visual cues to a failure. ...and now for my mea culpa.. the pinion wasn't fully tightened on the shaft when I first throttled up the VST and quickly spun off, perhaps causing a no-load power spike(?). This only occurred for a second or two before I realized what was going wrong, but is that enough to fry the esc/motor? Before I send this two units in for service, could this also be a compatibility issue with Futaba? It seems like most of my rx/tx calibration time stems from getting the motors to run in the right direction with my rx/tx. Also, these are the only setting I've had to change on both escs before things went south. Please advise? |
festusss - shouldn't be the futaba system, I use the same radio and receivers in my cars for years. More concerned about having to change the motor direction. I say that because some companies run extreme timing on their motors (even though timing may not be adjustable). When you reverse the direction of the motor, not that timing is working in a different fashion and could cause issues.
On the SC10 - only if the ABC wires were not attached correctly or the calibration was done wrong would effect motor direction with that set up. FOR/REV should not matter once you do the calibration. Where there any issues during calibration? PM me and let me know. |

Nikos....I went back a good 4-5 pages here and didn't see any mention of this , but when will the VT8 come back into stock at places like Amain? I'm in no hurry but would like to pick one up here in a few weeks.

Here is a pic of Kendall's pro4 setup he won the JConcepts Spring nats with. In the 6 minute heats he ran a 15 tooth gear on the Xtx8/ 4.5xl combo. Coming off at 170 deg. he thought it would get too hot for the mains. After calling Nick he went to a 13 tooth with some timing and top speed timing. He said the truck was just as fast but came off the 8 minute main at 140 deg. and using less than 4000 mah.
