I'm not sure where the cut off is but 12% should be fine. I did ask a friend at a hobby shop to order fuel in for me (I'm rural so I buy bulk). I wanted 10% Synthetic/5% castor oil. Anyway 50 Ltrs of 18% oil turns up. This was higher then I wanted but thought it would be ok. WRONG. Had problems with tune, plug fowling up etc. After trying many things finally remixed the fuel to 11% (not sure what % is syn/castor) and everythings sweet!

Two meets ago I left the car idleing outside the toilets b4 the final while I took my little girl to the little girls room and when I returned after awhile shes still running, a few blips and she was off. With the 18% it would of choked for sure.

Next fuel order I'll just get the components and mix myself, looking at maybe a 7%syn/4%castor oil mix..

(hmm 18% oil? - http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXNE12 but other sites have bottles at 12% , the difference is silver & green text)

All this has really got me confused on which plug to use with best results.

What pipe is recommened for this engine?

i have 11 race days and 4 practice nights one my
sirio turbo s7 cold running the engine on byron 30%.

the s7 plug is working awsome i might change it this weekend for the sake of running a new plug.

Well... my d3r is getting worse rapidly now. When I hold it by the flywheel and let it drop through its compression it makes a bit of a gurgling sound and drop through it after about 10 seconds.

I took it apart, and the piston looks OK, without any scratches or whatsoever. The liner however clearly shows some damage on the chrome plating. This may be because the chrome plating was never that good to begin with (see the photo I posted a few pages back), but it's quite clearly worn out a bit prematurely.

The engine has had about 6 to 7 litres of fuel through it and has always been tuned properly without overheating and a tad rich on the bottom end. Never has anthing but fuel and after run oil entered the engine... I don't know what I'm going to do with it now. Maybe I'll buy a new piston set for it or maybe I'll sell it completely (with warning to the new owner of course)...

Has the performance degraded? Some of the liners have a cross cut effect on them. This is normally towards the bottom.

Performance has not degraded yet, but compression is definitely less than it was before and fuel consumption has gone up a bit.
The liner does have a cross cut effect on it, I noticed that before running the engine for the first time. I will try to make a good photo of my liner so you can see the 'damage' on it. It's something I haven't seen before on any of my engines and it looks like the liner has some smooth and some 'rough' areas...

Ive seen the same effect on mine. Smooth and rough. Also are you talking compression or pop. These motors do loose there pop , thats when they get faster. It should last quite a bit longer though.

hey where is the cheapest place to buy sts engines?
im running a 1/10th buggy but i can run any combination (rotary carb or slide std shaft or sg) all i want is an easy to tune long lasting power full motor mostly easy to tune as i killed my kyosho gs15r.
i wouldnt mind a 12 but a 15 or 18 would be cool not sure what displacements sts sells.
cheers guys any input would be appreciated

Guys raced this motor for the first time the night with some great results, broke the track record for lap speed and over 6 minute race. The only small problem i was having is that it doesnt seem to like part throttle. Its not too rich in the bottom cause if i lean it any more it starts to zing a bit, but if you back off then quickly nail the throttle it clears itself and accelerates at a rapid rate. Has anyone had this problem and what did you do to fix it?
