So I have a question. After putting the engine back together, while spinning the crankshaft, at TDC I would get a "wobble" effect I guess or more of a dead spot when rotating the crankshaft constantly. Is this a sign of a worn out incorrectly conrod?
Engine runs fine though, just concerned that what ever happened to the engine during the weekend that I managed to do some damage to it. Engine just finished going through one gallon as well. |
The conrod will have a little tiny bit of clearance even when new - and is absolutely necessary to get oil in there. With the piston at TDC, you will notice that tiny bit of play as you rock the crank either side of TDC with the piston basically stuck in the pinch. This is normal. Even a tiny audible clicking noise can be sometimes heard. This is fairly normal - within reason. |

Temps here are starting to be close to 90°, so changed to the C7TGC which seems to have helped with the engine temps being stable at 210-220° |

Just curious what you guys are running for glow plugs. I was looking for some C6TGC but seems it was replaced by the cto6 plug. Anyone have experience with this new plug? |

I use C6TGC plugs in my Legend 28-8 with good performance. No issues whatsoever. 1.5 gallons on the original factory plug and still running like a top. |
the CT06 plug has replaced the c6tgc ..... it is a little broader heat range but works very similar to c6tgc
novarossi has tried to make things a little more simply labeled for the rest of the rc world .... lol o is for offroad and yes i have been using them for quite a while and they have been great |
Thank you guys for your reply on the glow plugs. |
Legend 25 question.
Would a 2096 and 41021 be a good combo for a Legend 25 or would the 41020 header be better with the 2096 pipe on this engine? This is for my RC8T3.

Ran an 11:30 in truggy today with the rolling at full tilt and it was still blowing lots of smoke. Not too shabby
|
Hey knowledgeable nova guys. I am breaking in my ultimate m4r and also may try out the nova mantra. Which pipes do u recommend for these 2 motors? After racing for 2 years, i am an open driver and i do travel to tracks such as psycho nitro blast and silverstate. (I love how u barely touch needles from temperature changes on Novas!)

I just went through my nitro buggy cleaning and refreshing it. I have not ran it in about 3 weeks. The engine was broken in on an EBIS and ran great for 2qts. It is an Adam Drake edition novarossi 5port. I was using the hot #5 plug that came with the engine. I replaced the fuel and pressure line and put in the new CTO6 medium plug. I tried to start it and make sure everything is good and the engine will not stay running unless the glow igniter is on. I tried to lean out the engine to see if that was the problem and it is not. Any help with this would be great. I have never had this issue before so not sure where to start. I have tried 2 different #5 plugs and 1 different #6 plug to see if it was the plug also |
So you replaced the plug an the pressure line and the problem started. Other plugs you have tried so it seems it must be the pressure line?
|
The engine draws fuel by suction at idle - there’s virtually it any tank pressure at idle.
Going from a hot plug to a medium plug will mean your mixture is too rich. Which needle(s) did you adjust and how much? I suspect you’re still too rich - that’s the only reason why an engine will die when the glow driver is disconnected if the glow plug is known good/new. |
I tried new pressure line to be sure and still same issue. I would lean the LSN needle little by little with no change. I then leaned with big turns. I stopped leaning at about 4turns lean from flush. I tried to lean the HSN needle as well just to try. I leaned the HSN about 2 turns in from flush with now change to it staying running. I have not opened this engine at all other than changing the carb insert and loosening the HSN the adjust the fuel nipple to line ope with the way I routed my fuel line. |
I thought about the going from a hot to medium plug so I put a new hot plug in to see if that helped and it don’t not help. |
Hows your fuel tank? Igniter fully charged? When you tip the car to the side does fuel pour out the pipe? I had a broken fuel tank and i had a similar issue. The tank would hold pressure and would weep from the seam but some how the fuel system was over pressured and dumping fuel in the motor
|
The tank was new. It only has the 2qts that I have ran through the motor. Can different pipes change the tune of the LSN? I have a 021 manifold with 9886 pipe on it now. I do have a new 9901 pipe as well. Maybe I just need to lean it out more on the LSN. It just seems like I am leaning it out a lot. 3-4 turn in from flush. Maybe I’m just over thinking it
|
Oh and yes there seems to be a lot of fuel coming out of the pipe |
You’re probably getting some things mixed up. Always start rich and work lean. Ignore how many turns in or out you are - the engine doesn’t care how many turns the needle is as long as it’s in the butter zone.
Easy method to tune - start out fat on both needles. Start with high speed and get it set satisfactorily. I recommend to tune to peak (perfect transition from idle to WOT) on the high and then once set work the idle. Get the idle set where it is slightly loaded up after 10-15 seconds of idling and a nice easy cleanout. Now go back to the main needle and adjust it a tiny bit richer. When your idle is set correctly, it should drop a degree of temperature after every couple seconds during a longer idle. |
I have tried the old tank. I replaced all the lines again. Could an air leak cause these issues? I rest everything back the stock settings. I leaned out out the LSN till the engine would stay running but it would lean bog when I applied some throttle. |

I have it set to .7mm. I have a paper clip that is .7mm |
Try going to .5-.6mm if the engine has some time on it. I set my engines to .5mm from new and adjust from there. Usually they end up being happy in the .5-.6mm range.
You should also make sure you’re not trying to get a solid tune on it until you have at least a whole tank through the engine so it’s thoroughly heatsoaked. If you try to tune it too soon, your tune will be off because the engine leans out a little bit as it heats up. |
I am going to send the engine to AMR. I think I lost compression some how. I’m going to send it in to confirm or deny if there is something wrong with the engine. |
Just wondering, those of you running the Nova. Are any of you running or tried the Ielasi Tuned Hammer 7T Novarossi at all? I’m thinking of purchasing one to run in my Mugen. What’s the power like? And run time? |
there is no such as thing as a standard setting with idle gap , lsn ,hsn settings on any engine.......
your cars fuel system and the fuel you use (mostly oil package) will depict how your needles will need to be adjusted more than anything .... period !!! you will learn through trial and error for the most part all different manufacturers have different materials they use with different rates of expansion and it greatly affects how the engine will need to be tuned ..... there are sooooo many variables its ridiculous happy motorin' |
It’s been very common to me in helping others to get their engines running properly where they have difficulties getting a good needle setting and finding the problem stems from an improper idle gap. For this reason I always recommend starting tight and working wider to find the sweet spot for the same reason one would start the needles rich and work lean on the needles. I’ve also found that an engine that isn’t thoroughly warmed up will almost never hold its tune and will usually end up being lean.
Just my experience. YMMV. |

I can see where my advice could be construed as “put it there and leave it there”, but that isn’t how I meant it to come across. My settings are initial only as every application and engine is different. Just to be clear.
And for the Ricky Bobby type RC Racers... Don’t run a super fat idle needle. Or a 1mm idle gap. You will probably have problems. LoL. |

Hows it going guys? This thread is amazing tons of amazong info. I got a used mito4 off eaby for 150 bucks an it came with the 9901/41021 combo as well. I must say this engine is very strong an just runs amazing an holds a tune very good. Im running it in my mugen mbx5R an she just flys you hit the trigger the power is right there right now . Im a bit nervous about this engine after reading about them failing.
This is my 1st high end engine an im very impressed. My engine came with the nova fuel cooler as well what do you guys think ? Dose it work or snake oil? Im running the nova clutch as well with the nova 14 tooth clutch bell. Im super impressed with this combo works super good lays the power down very good. |
Ok, so I have run my Mantra now for about 2-3 qts of fuel. I am still taking things a little easy as the motor is still very tight. Running my 9901/41021 combo. I have been happy with the performance so far, no mileage to report yet. Haven't timed it but it seems to be a little thirsty. I must admit, my eyes were recently opened.
A fellow racer at the track running the same car but different motor/pipe combo. P5 with 9886/41021. I'll be damned but that sucker flat out hauls the mail. He was running a 9901 and swapped to the 9886. Said it woke his motor up. After seeing how well that p5 ran with that combo I think I'll be getting a 9886 myself. Curious how a mantra will run on that combo. |
Ran an 11:22 with the karma(silver head)69 type carb,2096 w 2050 double bend header, blue restictor, stock shimming and a c5tgc plug. After a 20 min heat soak run. Not to shabby for the 90 i paid for it haha
