I have tried a couple options in that direction from medium to medium-cold with the same result. I want to add a shim but I would like to get an Orion blessing on that before I just act. If the engine were out of warranty and acting up that would be a different story.
I have read several threads of this exact issue with varying input. My plug filaments are shiny clean and UN-fowled, simply broken, no melting or heat related indications and no odd vibrations that I can detect. Horizon is contacting Orion to see what they say regarding shimming, fuel percentage and high altitude racing. I'd like to get this nailed so I can enjoy this Engine. At $6.00 a pop I don't want to keep throwing money away, just tap some free knowledge if I can. The thin air also lowers your power output (less oxigen = lesser combustion = less power) thats why a lot of people run higher nitro content at high altitude (40% for instance). A combination of both can result in detonation when going too far so don't take it to the max. I'd start with removing some shims. How much you can remove i don't know but i'm sure other people who run at high altitude can tell you more about that. This was also explained already in the Orion Alpha 3 port thread btw. |

Just completed break in on a new Alpha 3 Port and first day at the track.
We live in a Dry high altitude setting (8500ft) and I can't seem to keep a glow plug in this engine. I'm getting 2-3 runs on a plug then it fails. Engine temps were 220 degrees today, really good power. Byrons Gen 2 30% fuel. The manual does not touch on Head shimming for humid or dry locations etc. Could drop to 20% fuel, any ideas? I REALLY like this engine, but its a bit of a bummer to put in a new plug every tank or two of fuel. Any help would be appreciated? Running #6 turbo - ORI88855 id suggest u start by using 40 percent fuel if available .. if not available .. u can try n start by removing the thinnest possible head shim .. one at a tym .. and try using #5 plug ... im at 3500ft (not much tho)... :) |
Glow Plugs
No 40% fuel locally, would have to special order it.
The Orion Proglow plugs come in 5, 6 and 7 so I have ordered some 7's to try. The Orion site recommended the 6 for this engine but I'm sure they did not consider a Mile high application. I did the break-in on a #6 but it failed just after leaning the motor for the initial performance tune. I have heard of endurance plugs for long races with heavier filaments, but I don't want to "band-aid" this problem with expensive plugs. Right now I have .6mm x3 shims in place in the Alpha (Factory), but we run .5mm on our stock LOSI 350's. We've never have had this problem with the stock motors at this altitude, they seem to run great. What are your feelings about the .6mm ? should I remove one .1 shim along with a colder plug? |
I have a Team Orion 5 port discovery engine? I have a gallon on mine, running 30% Odonnell speed blend. I am using the 5 plug. I keep leaning it out and it will run good for a tank or two then it is rich again. Seems to rich on top more than bottom. I am in North Florida. I am using a Dynomite 053 pipe. Any ideas?

Question on the Orion 2013 pipe. Is there a difference between the Orion and Werks 2013 pipes? I have the Orion on my Losi Nitrotec and it runs great. Just curious about the 2 pipes.

ok thanks guys

We tested all sorts of stuff in Colorado Springs last year, and we didn't have to do anything to the head shimming to get the engines to run properly. We ran 40% nitro, and if you are at 8500 feet, I would say without a doubt you need 40% nitro. All the other stuff we tried like changing the head clearance, we put back to the factory settings. We didn't have any problems with plug life..

Anyone want a 5 port Team Orion? I can't get this thing to run consistant. It keeps running rich and can't get ant help with it. I think I am going back to Novarossi.
