Put a small piece of Teflon tape over the ball stud before you snap on your ball end. this will eliminate a lot of slop.

J_Bone 05-12-2012 08:58 AM

The Avid bell crank gets rid of the servo saver. that's it.
The slop you see is in the steering bar, bushing, ball cups and steering knuckle. Those are the areas you want to do preventive maintenance.
I have the Hot Racing assembly and the steering bar and bushing has a tighter tolerance and slop is almost completely removed from that area. If your ball cups have slop, replace them. There is no real good fix for a worn part. They are cheap and will make a worlds of a difference when new. Check your steering knuckles. It becomes sloppy over time as well. Then check all hinge pins. Just go down the line and inspect those areas.
Not one majic part will clean up all your steering slop.

Anyone using the Jconcepts carbon brace? If so how is it working for you?

Swampracer 05-12-2012 02:47 PM

Carbon brace

I've used the carbon brace with good results. It's an effective add on to the kit.

Avid and J Concepts have come out with some great items for this kit.

Did associated come out with big bore shocks for the sc10?

Delta_Ice 05-12-2012 05:33 PM

I picked up a Titan 550 reverse 21 turn motor for bashing and practicing with my sc10. Now my sc10 is stock with the xp sc200 esc and I am having serious issues with lack of speed. The thing just crawls and I have no idea why. I am currently waiting on a new stock motor to come in as I will be racing stock class but the fragility of it is why I went with a titan for bashing / practice on recommendation from the local hobby shop. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Just getting back into off road, have a FT SC10, have a lot of spring rub, was reading about Avid springs. What all is required to convert and where can you get the parts?

Not yet, they are due for release soon.

I wasn't aware the Avid setup didn't come with the connector between the arms so I threw the aluminum STRC connector on and it's solid. A friend of mine had a good idea for getting rid of the last bit of play in the steering by putting heat shrink tubing on the ball ends. I tried it on mine and wasn't satisfied with the results probably because I used different heat shrink tubing. It got me thinking of what else can be done to remove the last bit of play, any good ideas? :)

Take my advice... leave the slop. the reason everyone replaced the servo saver/rack was because it would deflect under load too easily. You want some slop in the vehicle to make it a little forgiving to drive. Not to mention, if you make everything really tight, then something will be more likely to snap under impact.

Personally, and this is just my opinion so don't everyone get upset with me :D, I feel that Bob is correct. I have heard people at my track as well talking about the slop that still exists after installing the Avid bellcranks, and I feel like the slop that is still existent isn't really that big of a deal. The Avid bellcrank is designed to remove the servo saver spring, and that is what it does. Avid never claims to eliminate all the slop, but rather the flex that the saver spring causes. I think the small amount of side-to-side movement that exists at the steering rack with the Avid bellcranks installed is quite minimal. I think that if that small bit of movement wasn't there, the truck would probably drive almost exactly the same. I'm sure not everyone on here feels the same way about this topic as I do, but that's fine, everyone is fully allowed to have there own opinion about how things work. I just wanted to voice my feelings concerning the topic, and invite anyone else on here to as well :)

+1

Ober, were are you racing 1/10 scale over the summer if you are?

From what everybody says looks like Im gonna go with the avid steering but what is the connector between the arm that dosent come with it do I have to buy something else.

Acill 05-13-2012 06:35 AM

Ever have one of those nights at the track? I just could not get my line down. I ended up taking 5th in the end, but man I was fighting my truck all night. I think every adjustment I made was out of anger and I just made things worse.

One thing I will say, the Avid kit made things much more responsive! I actually had to tun up my expo and slow my steering down a little bit!!

No, you won't have to buy anything else at all. Installing the Avid rack is quite simple. The package will contain only two pieces. Below is the SC10 manual sequence for constructing the stock steering rack. I have went ahead and circled in red, the 2 stock pieces you will be replacing with the 2 pieces that come in the Avid package. Other then that, everything will be installed the same. The connecting piece you are probably talking about is the steering rack or Ackerman bar, shown as Part# 9659 on the below diagram.

In addition, keep this picture from the Avid website handy during installation of the Avid bellcranks. It will help you see the placement of them:

Let me know if you have anymore questions about them then :)
