I've had that problem happen to me once. Turns out, it wasn't the ESC at all, and it was that the servo's wire inside the case had come undone and was shorting out.

1) 4.5 motors are 10000000x punchier than a 17.5 motor. You've still got "stock finger." Believe me, figuring out your throttle finger is going to be the biggest change.

5 seconds is.... quite frankly a very long time when racing. How often do you hold down the brakes for more than 1 second?

Heck, 5 seconds is almost half a lap on our medium sized carpet track.

I run my fan in 17.5 stock. I find that without the fan, the ESC gets up to 125-130f after 6-7 minutes of running on a medium technical carpet track.

Still well within the temperature tolerance...
