I really want to get into racing and not miss any this summer.

your wanting to do some race events? I would suggest running more than one class, lol. You will have a LOT of downtime at more race events.

What would be a good starting point for gearing a 8.5t motor with the 81t spur that comes with the kit? Can anyone give me some insight on the pinion I should start with.

Relatively cool temps for back to back packs.

21 if smaller track (most running 10.5 or 8.5)
22 if medium track (most running 8.5)
23 if larger track (many running 7.5 or 8.5)
