I would tear the steering system apart and recheck everything. Make sure all the bearings are seated correctly etc.

For engines that I store for a long time I tear...

For engines that I store for a long time I tear the engine down then clean the block with denatured alcohol, re oil then I put it in a food saver bag with desiccant packs in it and vacuum seal it.
