I had the steering stutter problem but it went away after I disassembled the steering pot (I did not use contact cleaner). I bought mine in Japan August of last year, and the problem surfaced soon after I upgraded the firmware from 1.0J to 1.2E

For a $600-$700 radio we shouldn't have to be doing running repairs though.

We need to know if those running the 1.2 firmware are the only ones having problems. Anyone on 1.0 and 1.1 with the steering stutter problem? |

Seconded that I don't think it is a firmware issue.
I did a full strip down, unkink the wires, put everything back on. Viola...the issue is gone..... But another car has issue now, with the servo stuttering....which used to be ok. Honestly, I've given up. |
Did further troubleshooting...
Plugged the servo to the throttle channel...and servo works fine. So definitely, there is something wrong with the steering unit...and it rules out servo incompatibility. As a last resort...sprayed the back of the steering PCB with lots of contact cleaner. Sprayed the connectors for good measure as well. *Previously I was only cleaning the steering pot* Put back everything..made sure wires are unkinked... And....it works............................................. .............................. FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I agree. The reason I bought the 4PX is because my previous radio was a 4PK that I bought in 2009. I still have it and I never had a single problem with it all these years.

The reason why I went with the matured 4PKS-R last Fall was exactly these concerns, but did not expect mechanical issues on the 4PX. As for my 4PKS-R, no issues to report. |
worth upgrading to this from a 4pl? just a basher.

Unless you have money to burn, definitely not.

Just bought the 4PX as an early bday prez for myself. Bought the Japanese version (grey market) as the legit version costs a bit more. The radio came with a LiFe battery and the receivers I got are the non wired versions specifically for electric use which isn't a problem.
I'm very happy with the overall quality of the radio. The screen is a huge improvement over the 3PK from way back in the day. Menu is MUCHHH better than the 3PK and the radio is much lighter.I haven't tried the radio on the track as weather here sucks ATM. Can't tell if the responds time is any faster than before. One complaint I have with the radio is the D/R dials. I find it really hard to reach with my thumb and make adjustments on the fly without looking down on the transmitter. I'm used to the rotary knob on the 3PK and like it better. |
I got the same Asian version, only I bought from someone here on RCTech and found out when I started to look through the manual and couldn't read it. LOL The menus are all fine in English on the unit.
I got LiFe Futaba battery and 2 sets of the R304SB-E receivers as you did. Great for electric 1/10 no antenna mast anymore. I also had in my deal the Atomik RC bag and another Faast receiver the R614FS. It works perfectly fine. I wonder if I can buy a English manual off Futaba for like $20. I printed the manual from PDF file at work and going to spiral bind it. I am definitely dying for the Protek Case and 4PX foam insert to come back into stock at Amain to protect this thing. |
Its not so much the weight that I have issue with, I like the light feel of it, it's the plastics and build in general. Regardless if I payed 400 or 600 it retails in Australia for around the $700aud mark so that's what my fellow Aussie consumers are paying for it, good on you for getting it for $400 with coupons but anyway, ,it's the flagship of futabas surface radios and it should reflect this in the build as well as performance and I don't care what radio you have if you drop it from a decent height something is gonna break let alone more than once, come on mate, why don't you try with yours and let me know if it breaks or not, I don't know what type of radio you have come from but coming from the Ko kiy it doesn't seem on par as far as build and quality goes,I'm not the only one to say the radio does have a cheap feel to it for a top of the shelf product. In saying that the radio is growing on me like others have said and it does seem more durable now it's been used a bit but the quality of the plastics and build is just not where it should be in MY opinion. Having sad that IT IS growing on me more and more the more I use it, but I def wont be dropping it off the table let alone a roof . Really ..

4px
What battery is people using. And will it work
With lipo |
Do not use a LiPo,
Use a 2S LiFe I use a LiFe that I had spare from my 4PK |
The screen and interface does it for me. I came from a KIY and I think this radio is built better then the KIY. Will see after 1+ years of use.
