Do people use timing on the motor itself mixed with esc timing settings? Trying to learn the most optimal way to setup a motor for mod 2wd buggy class.
|
Seriously........ :flaming:
Today I get an email saying they have a spot at the Reedy Race for me if I can attend. Why not a month ago when I could have actually planned for it!! Just have to sit back and watch the Viper boys on Live RC!! I know Lee and Travis are in the invitational class. Look for JP and Paul in the Open - I think there might be 2-3 others as well. |
Wow, so last minute
|
. We have some locals on the list, hopefully they get in. on a few hour drive from here

ESC/Motor timing
Do most people use a combination of ESC and motor can timing to find the sweet spot or do they tend to turn down the motor timing and use the ESC setups as the main timing function for performance?
I'm having shutoff issues even if heat is 140 or less and then it works again after 20s or so. Similar to other posts in this thread. I put the VTX 10r BE on blinky for now and have the motor timing at just 20 to see if it still does it. I do have the esc shutoff temp for motor at 180 and esc at 220. Maybe this is part of the reason based on what I read in this thread. I have yet to try it out, but hope to in the next few days. Motor - Tekin Gen2 10.5 ESC - VTX 10r Black Edition Battery - Orion weight transfer pack rated at 90c discharge (4000mah) |
I set motor timing first then use ESC for tuning on all of my vtx10s
Could be that the viper esc doesnt read the tekin sensor correctly? You usually need to have the same brand for motor temps to operate correctly... |
well motor timing has the best feel imo. But you can find a sweet spot in stock motors for power and cooling, mixxing them. For mod, I dont even bother. I already have way too much power
|
Wow Nick that sucks LOL.... We have 4 locals heading out. Mike Gay, Gunnar Reick, Kyle Holinger and Alex K. Mike and Kyle are snowed in here in PA so not sure if/when they are going to make it out. I believe Gunnar and Alex should already be out there.

If you want the ESC to shut off if the motor hits 160 on the outside, set the cutoff around 200-220. Keep checking it with a temp gun. |
VST 17.5 fdr for 17.5 blinky TC?
Hey guys,
I know this question has been asked before but as time goes on I figure people are pushing these VST motors harder to keep up with some of the new generation monster power 17.5s (KillShot, Peak Vantage 2, Schurrspeed) Running VTX10R BE and VST 17.5 (stock rotor) in Blinky 17.5 TC on a medium size carpet track. What sort of FDR should I be looking at? What kind of endbell timing? Is there another rotor that is better suited than the stock 12.3? And finally, what are the max case temps that these motors can tolerate without going soft and possibly letting the all-important magic smoke out? |
d16dcoe45 - our motors were designed for more torque than rpm (like the others you mentioned), so in 17.5 we will be the first to admit its not ideal for TC or 1/12, especially on bigger tracks - I see you are in NY, if you run at Critters it might not be to bad. But would probably need to gear 2-3 teeth higher (with 64p gears). Off road is different because with a lower traction level (even slightly) gearing can help even out the process. Chris Bing just borrowed a VST17.5 and tied for TQ at the CRCRC Midwest off road race in 2wd 17.5. We won the 2012 ROAR Stock Nats in 2wd 17.5. Its not a slouch.
We haven't released a newer motor, because we continue to wait and see that the rules makers consider "legal" for a 17.5. The rules seem to keep changing, so its hard to dedicate new money and development to something that changes by the time you are ready to sell it. Rybeau40 - like Jim mentioned your Motor Temp Cut Off is set to low. That is why it keeps cutting off. The measurement off the rotor is higher like mentioned. Try the higher settings and it shouldn't be an issue. As for your timing question - I would generally recommend to have the motor do the majority of the work and only add a little esc timing - a little can go a long way. Biggest mistake we often see if people using way (way!) to much timing on the esc and then wonder why if failed. If done right, monitored right, it can be wicked fast -- if done wrong, well...... Hope that helps. |

Thanks for the replies. Right now I have a 7.5 mach2 with 20 degrees on endbell and 5 degrees on the two timing settings found within the ESC. I have the start and finish rpm set based on the formula of kv x 6.43 x 0 and kv x 6.43.
Will most likely gear @ 21/78 or 23/76 area. Just want to make sure I don't burn anything up with the mix. |
When I was running a 7.5 mach2 I set 35 or 37.5 on the endbell and didn't boost/turbo.
