Exactly the info I was looking for thanks! Should make that a default setting also. Does the car just stop moving when it hits this cut off? Or does it cut out a bit then start going again after a few?
I will feel much better with that set.

Sorry, I was assuming we were talking about the VTX line of ESCs.

With the Copperhead, there is no motor sensor, so the only sensor it has is in the ESC to help protect itself.

Maybe some insight into what car, gearing, batteries you are using?

VTX10 8.5t combo
airtronics mx3x
sc10 FT
20/87 gearing

JJay,
what surface are you running on? The gearing looks fine. The 8.5 is a pretty mild mod. But if you are running on a really high bite surface temps will come up. But still 170 seems high. Have you gone through your drive train and change for binding and bad bearings?

Its indoor clay prob medium bite to high bite with some decent jumps prob made for 1/8th scale. I will be going through the trans and putting in all new avid bearings and redoing the diff as soon as my bearings come in the mail. I also set my motor protection at 200 degrees.

I was having issues also with lag between forward and reverse. I recalibrated the esc and it seems a bit better but then it seemed like the steering was glitching in reverse. I hope to get back to the track by this weekend.

Here in 2 weeks or so I'm buying my first Viper product.
A 10.5 Viper motor. Plenty of power for mod 2wd corr.

FLHX1550 01-15-2013 06:02 AM

Well 170 is borderline IMO. It shouldn't make anything fail, but long term effects may weaken the magnet, which will make it run slower / hotter and eventually could fail (magnet will start coming apart).

Some info that I would need to help:
What is the timing on the motor?
What is the ESC punch?
What is the PWM Drive Frequency?
What is the PWM Brake Frequency?
How much drag brake?
Is the transmission free rolling?

I think your gearing might be a tad on the high side, nothing criminal, but I think you went down one or two teeth you should see the temps drop.

Also, you have to be conservative when looking at other people's gearing and setups. If your track might have more grip, less grip, or a different layout. All of which can change the load on the motor.

Locally here, 8.5s seem to be the most popular wind, but most people turn the end point down some too. I myself liked the feel of a 8.5 turned down some vs. a 10.5 at 100%. The 8.5 turned down didn't have as much bottom end.

JJay03 01-15-2013 06:06 AM

No added timing was in practice mode profile 8
punch is 75%
9600hz throttle pwm
brake pwm is default for profile 8
20% drag brake
Most people run 20/87 or 19/87 with a 8.5t at the track.
I need to pull out the trans and make sure there is no binding that could be a possibility if I torqued the motor plate bolts too tight.

Dumb question, a Tekin T8 is 2-pole right ? Installing VTX8 today. Thanks.

As far as I know, all 1/8 scale brushless motors are 4-pole, but the best thing would be to verify that with Tekin.

4 pole. Cannot imagine an 1/8 scale running a 2 pole motor. I'd be mighty weak in an RC that big.

VTX8 installed in DEX408. Ran her up and down the street. Stock Profile 1 seems to have mad punch...

Sweet ESC. Can't wait to get some laps on it. Gonna play with V-link later
