Connecting rods are a wear item, if our buddy would replace the rods once in a while he would not have any issues LOL ! one cannot expect to beat the crap out of a engine for a entire race season, have it repinched, then run the crap out of it for another 2 gallons without changing the rod...that is disaster waiting to happen.....As you know our buddy runs hard and fast and shows the engines little mercy... The Nova R7 is a top notch rod, but even it has its mechanical limits.our buddy just pushed beyond the rods limits and its as simple as that.........Rods do need to be changed out if you run the engines really hard......especially if the rod has had to go thru 2 breakins.........

So what do you think the cause is?

I have that same straight cut on the inner race of my bearing. Makes me think it was a manufacturing defect, if the bearing exploded on its own, I wouldn't think it would be a straight cut like that, let alone it being the same straight line as in my bearing.

I am not sure....but i suspect something is wrong with the bearings race to begin with......as its not a issue I have ever seen before, and its not common with any sort of correlating factor... all were runing different fuels, in different engines, different plugs and conditions..one was in Canada the others in the USA...... one engine stock, others modified , one a high end factory ceramic bearing, the others aftermarket ceramic......

rcuser567345 10-13-2012 10:11 PM

Neal, did the Nova bearing that exploded have that same straight line cut in it?

Looks similar ;)
This is two different bearing races

That is not to be known

Its not a problem with the races actually

Maybe one day i will explain but today is not the day

My blowhard ego might get damaged ,

I look forward to the day you are willing to explain.

If its not a problem with the races, than the brand of the bearing would be irrelevant, right?

on the bearing in my photo there is no sign of peeling or running dry like the one in your photo...... the bearing is pristine in all aspects other then the cracked race.... Bearing has about 6 tanks of fuel thru it from when it was installed into the engine..... This bearing here did not come apart from being beaten up like the one in your photo.....

I didn't know you had any other friends :p:p

well still the facts remain the same...a connecting rod is a wear item that has mechanical limits... If a person pushes the rod past its limits its going to give out...... This is the same for both modified and stock engines alike..... Of course how hard the person pushes the engine can play a big role in how long the rods will last..... A person can easily kill a connecting rod in one tank of fuel if they so choose to..and likewise a person can run a engine for many gallons without any rod issues if they choose to...It all comes back to owner of the engine and how they take care of their mill........
