Scoop!!!! No he is not on the tech forums. I dont want him to get caught up in it.
We did however did a pretty good job with our b-5's last weekend. I think I need to completely re tune his though. He is good in the quali but when we get to the mains he seems to flame around the 7 min mark. I even turned his idle up before the main and it still happened. He has about 4 to 5 gallons on his so I think its still good. Could just be the tune. Ron if you could chime in hear that would be great. I am having a hard time tuning the way you recommend. I am kind of a details guys but cant seem to get it down. After the race I fired his up and it started right away. Noticed he was a little fat on the bottom so I leaned it 1 and then 2 hours. Good on the bottom and turned the idle to compensate. I then leaned the high 1 and then what ended up being 2 hours. Good bottom good top and idle was dead on. After clearing it out idle settled down to normal idle after 4 seconds. Everything is checking out but when he hits that 6 to 7 min mark it flames. Note: Before the start of the qualifiers I had him take 3 laps and checked the tune. 3 more laps and checked the tune. A total of tank and half and his tune was dead on. Why would it be good for that long but during the race is where the problem comes in. In fact after the first qualifier His idle was set to high so I backed it off 1 hour and it fine on the second. I have to be doing something wrong. Seems like when the engines (any engine not just the b-5) are new I can tune them but when we get a few gallons on them I get lost. Mine performed flawlessly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not to butt in but have you tryed switching out the tank? I have seen this before or at least similar problems and once was the tank and the other was loose headbolts. Both only happen when the fuel would be lower in the tank and more pressure was built up. |
I had orderd new ceramic bearings for my B5 and did the chore or pulling the old ones out yesterday.... The front came out without a real fight but man that rear bearing gave me a heck of tuff time... I been changing bearings in my OS engines for a decade using my wifes oven and that has always worked rather well.. That rear bearing on my B5 was tuff. I ended up putting a few little knicks here and there but luck has it I'm pretty good with a dremel tool with a stone and polishing tip... I'm sure it will be ok... I had heard that the ceramics with be rather tight once I have the engine back together and they take a tank or so to run in ? Just wanna make sure I dont 2nd guess my work with bearings being a little snug.... Also I had to chuck the crank up in a drill and spin it with 1000 grit so I could get the bearing on the crank all the way... Peter said I might have to do this and yep sure enough....

Mine performed flawlessly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sounds more like you are re-tuning the engine when its cold... you mentioned it was really rich when you fired it up..... then you leaned it out, then after 7 minutes it flamed...... to me it sounds like you should have left the tune alone and allowed the engine to come up to full operating temp and lean itself out...a cold engine will run much richer then a hot engine.... Now I may be completely of base its early LOL...however to me it sounds like you are tuning it cold on the starter box, then the engine is getting warm on the track and going too lean and flaming out... |

Hey Ron, Just ordered a B5 and 2013 from A Main today. Can't wait to put this in my new D8T. I have been running Jammin truggys and engines for years with great luck and needed a change. I cant wait to try my new engine so I had two day shipping . :D

B5 w/2013 is broke in. Got a race going to this weekend. This motor has wicked bottom end, I am thinking of gearing up from 13t to 15t but I will see how it does at the track first.

Hey guys so I have 2 gallons through it and I love it!
I have a question though. How would I know if I'm too rich on the bottom and too lean on top? My car idles fine and runs fine, but is there symptoms of running too lean on top and rich on bottom? Thanks Mike |
I need some ideas on getting rid of the low end bog on my B5.
It was really bad and then I changed my pressure line and it almost went away, but it's still somewhat there. Here's is what I have checked so far. Lines, Tune ( I really don't think it's a tune problem) Clutch All bearings have been changed throughout the buggy Cleaned out the carb I really don't know what else to check. As much as changing the pressure line helped I think it might be a leak somewhere. I'm going to check the tank next. I've blown through it and it didn't seem to have any leaks, but I'll put it under water tommorow to make sure. What are other places I could seal and what should I use to do it. I did notice that a little dirt was holding around the bottom of the high end needle but I don't know how to check an engine for leaks or what to use to seal up any leaks an engine might have. And what could I use to seal up all the spots that a fuel tank could leak at. There was also a little dirt holding on around the pressure line nipple and that could possibly be the problem. I'm almost betting that it is a tank issue because I have had really bad luck with fuel tanks so far with my RC8. I actually got a jammin tank becasue the AE ones were bad both times I got one. I even have a friend that got a brand new RC8T today and there were bubbles in his fuel line. Everyone keeps telling me it's running great, but I remember how it ran before this started happening, and it's nothing like it was before. It's almost like the clutch is engaging to soon, but with all the power the B5 has down low I really can't see the clutch bogging it down like it is. I checked the clutch and everything looked fine. Anyway a list of things to check that could cause a low end bog would really help me out. |
What you want to do is mix some dish soap with water, and using a paint brush put some of the solution on the engine on parts that could leak. I.E. Needles, Carb, Backplate... Then blow into the fuel line. It helps to take the pipe off and seal off the exhaust with your finger.
If you see bubbles, you have a leak. There are O-Rings on mostly everything in the B5. So if you have a leak, I would start by replacing those rather than using gasket maker. |
