If I lean at full operating temp of 200 + I have better luck but find it difficult to keep it in this range while I'm trying to adjust it and end up putting it back on the track in the 170 range.

Since I always preheat to about 150 shouldn't I be able to get it close at this time, or do I have some small leaks that are causing this. I have ordered new seals for the carburetor and am planning on pulling the needles and carb and reinstalling all with grease.

The engine now has 4 gallons through it and still has very good pinch. The tunning issues I am mentioning started during break in after about 1 quart of fuel. I did add booster to the first 1/2 gallon of fuel se there was a lottt of oil present during the first 1/2 gallon.

For what its worth, I started with a # 6 plug and switched to a # 5 after about one quart as I couldn't keep it lit with the # 6.

Thanks for all the help.

Engines should always be fully warmed before tuning, ALWAYS! If you tune too soon then 5-10 minutes into a race you will see the engine begin to fall on it's face due to lean bog, if you tune to performance at initial start up.. And once it begins to lean bog, richening it up it futile, until you kill engine and let it cool off completely..

All that said I prefer to run as close to a half tank of fuel as I can before tuning. When you decide to tune try to tune the engine around the 1/2 tank mark. If you tune with a full tank you may be too lean at end of tank and if you tune at empty tank then you may be too rich at full..

For plugs I run O'Donnell, but only because it is hard for me to get Orion in my area, and I have a ton of O'Donnell plugs.. Orion plugs are very nice and Orion engines work best with Orion Plugs. With the warmer months of racing coming a slightly cooler plug might be in order.

After rereading everything posted between the 2 of us, I don't think we are going to be able to diagnos this over the net. I'm going to suggest finding the best engine tuner at your local track or LHS, and asking them for help..

Essentially my suggestion is to reset needles and retune from scratch with .8-1mm idle gap, and go from there.. Good luck and keep us informed on what you find out.

Since this a thread for the Team Orion engine. Are these engines the same with the Mike Truhe edition? Sorry if this question has already been asked.

This was our first impression also, but I think we got stuck in a "blind spot" in the low end.
We've experienced earlier with other brands the same thing, and it turned out that we needed to go even leaner that we first dared. Then it suddenly startet to react "normal" again. Ie we've been fine-tuning in the wrong range, sort of...

Last practice day confirmed this to be the case with the Tebo combo we are testing now.
2 gallons on it and it runs very strong!!

Power has never been an issue. In fact I can usually just fly by anyone on the straight sections. Now if I could just learn how to drive.

What engine did you have before the Tebo combo and how do they compare? How does the Tebo combo run: strong on low end? strong in mid? strong on top?

I'm sure its good all around but I'm sure it shines more in one area so which is it?? http://www.rctech.net/forum/classic_...es/biggrin.gif

I just bought a new mte .21. Any little tips and tricks you guys have found with these. I haven't even started break in yet. I will be using it in my late model, so run times need to be about 6 minutes. Thanks

Not really.. Pre-heat before starting, at least 180.. Idle first tank on the box.. 2nd tank blip throttle slightly on box. Tank 3 start very slow driving, start leaning it a bit at this point. UNtil you hit half a gallon or so. Then your pretty close to ready for a race tune..

I'm just now at 1 gallon on my discovery, and will say that the engine never has gone super rich, it very gradually richend up.. At 3/4 gal the temps dropped 40-50 degrees, but it never did act boggy..

We've been using the O.S. Speed engines for some years now, so thats our benchmark.

Still a bit early to tell the details of the power range, but it feels like the Tebo/King engine has more power overall.
Biggest difference (at least compared to the VZ based O.S. Speed engine) is a stronger midrange. I think the XZ based Speed engine has more power in the midrange than the old VZ baseed ones, but the Tebo/King engine has even more. Still very driveable though.
Seems like the midrange is very "wide". We hardly ever get into the toprange, even on larger tracks...

For those who have the Discovery 5 port, how is the power range?

The 2058 pipe is great on the CRF engines, but the Discovery have a "normal" crankshaft, so I dont know if there will be the same difference.

How is the Discovery responding to 2013 and 2057 pipes?

Discovery reacts the same way as King/Tebo engines. The porting and timing is very similar, and the Discovery likes the 2058/2013. 2057 doesn't work so well in the US style tracks. Some euro guys can get it to work, but we never really run it.

Being a current racer of a Discovery 5-port I'll have to agree with PitPop 100%.. The low end is nice, not soft, not harsh, just about perfect, with 2013, The mid range is much like the Tebo/King engine was described. Top end might be lacking a bit, but not alot..

Fireball if ou wanna run my Discovery this weekend at Hobby world let me know. I'll bring it by Wed or Thursday.. You can finally get a real race tune on it, and finish off break-in, not that there seems to be any left..

rcmadnes 05-02-2011 07:03 PM

Thanks Scott. I'm building a new MP9 WC this week and hope to have it ready. I also rebuilt my Orion engine so I hope to get some time on it this weekend. You may have to come over to my track so we can do some testing. I'm still waiting for the WC engine to be released from Horizon. Can't wait to try it!

Pitpop, I see that the World Champ engines are going to be limited production so what piston/sleeve would one use for a rebuild? Is this a regular 5 port or does it have it's own port timing?

Thanks
