CRF have all the bells and whistles(CRF crank, ceramic bearing, lightened head, etc)

The standard alpha discovery are a less expensive alternative (steel bearing, standard crank, standard head), that offer very similar performance at a very reasonable cost while keeping the quality the same.

To pitpop, first off thanks for all the helpful advis and the time it takes to answer our questions. Next I just purchased a new Orion .21 abi 7 port crf for my RC8T truggy. In the directions it recomends breaking in the motor with 16% nitro. Is this typical and what you would suggest? And lastly I am going to order a new tuned pipe. Either 2013 or the 2058. What is the difference and your recomendation?

Hi everyone. Newbie to RCTech and 1/8th scale racing. I was into 1/10th scale racing from the mid 80's through the late 90's (one of those "electrics rule" guys) A local club where I live built an incredible 1/8th scale track last year and I caught the bug and bought a new Mugen MBX6T kit last week from my LHS. I have been lurking around the forums reading all the great posts planning my purchase's. I was hoping to get some feedback on this engine pipe combo. Is it as good as the Alpha Discovery 5 port that I have been reading about. Its a little more but not on back order. Thanks in advance. Great Thread! :)

I have never ran that motor, but i do believe there were several ABI .21's out at the time. I see no reason why it would not be able to power your truggy though. Are the CRF a lil outta the price range?

Yes The CRF's are little out of my price range. I dont have much experience in nitro engines. I have the racing bug bad so I looking for a nitro engine that is going to be competitive, reliable and great fuel economy. The guys in the local club lean toward OS engines almost unanimously. I always try to be a little different and they like to bash the italian engines. I am also lookiing at the Werks B5 and the Alpha Discovery

if this is the engine in question. It is definately a solid unit, but i would save the coin and go with the discovery (has the updated crankcase and carburetor)

The Alpha Discovery is actually $90 cheaper than this model but back ordered. I like the lighten head of this model. I am not sure how accurate the HP ratings are but the Alpha Disc. states 2.7 HP and this one states 2.65 HP. I would imagine the 3 port would achieve a little better fuel mileage. Which I feel is the more important statistic in racing with reliability being next.

You can drill your own head.Thats what i did.pitpop said he was geting 10 mins at rev which is very good. Mine is getting is 8.5 min with 7.5 insert with half a gallon with a jp3 which is a gas hog of a pipe. Once broken in i expect 10+ min per tank at race tune.

I'm wondering if A-Main will carry the Discovery engine or not?? Every other Orion carrier seems to have had them in stock and are now out of stock, but A-Main never had them??

Hi Guys. Back from the frozen tundra and into the 70 degree weather. :)

criss, you can break in the engine with whatever fuel you will be running. I think the directions have to cover every level of ability, and for a very novice RCer, it's probably safe. If you have any engine tuning experience, as long as the engine remains rich during the initial running stages it will be fine.

Right now I have to say the 2058 is the way to go. Gobs of power, smooth delivery, and a little quieter than the 2013. If you don't mind the bark of the 2013, it's a beast tho. :)... 2013 isn't as smooth or mid-range type power like the 2058, just a lot of it when you pull the trigger and screaming top end. 2013 isn't legal at EFRA events or other European races.

The 3 port has a ceramic bearing, and a lightened head, plus it's ABI which means basically blueprinted engine. The 2066 isn't my favorite pipe though, and it has the composite carb too. You really need to seal these carbs up and check all the orings. It's plastic so all the fittings and seals need to be inspected and sealed. This is a great engine though, one of my all time favorites. :nod: You can get great fuel economy out of this engine if you set it up right.

Cody ran a variation of the Worlds engine. Basically a 5 port with the new crank case material, but the porting and crank timing is slightly different than the Worlds engine. This was one of the engines we tested but didn't use in Pattaya.
