Jonro, Hate to tell you this, but the tune was off on that engine.
The piston has been cooked, and detination from being lean, and more than likely the lean condition has hammered the rod bushing out and changed the compression and timing, which in turn burnt the glow plug out.
I would not salvage anything out of that engine other than the carb and head!
Adam Drakes tune on this engine is:
.045 in from flush Hsn
.045 out from flush Lsn
.030 in from flush, idle screw
6mm restrictor
GRP 5 plug ( I run a GRP 4 plug)
2035 GRP pipe
The engine will run between 150 to 190 degrees(nitrotane,30%)
Good Luck

The piston looks allot darker and worse in that photo than IRL, plus the plug had no coil in it right after the engine died. The engine was running rich with a temp of around 190.

I put over 20 ltrs of fuel through this engine without a hiccup, unless someone sneaked into my house during the night and totally messed with me needles thats the only way it could have run lean, which it wasn't.

Alan D. 02-13-2009 12:52 AM

190 is at the upper end of heat for those GRP motors.
Heck tonight Truhe's motor was running at 170 and it was flying.

mine runs at 160 at it runs great

Franchize04 02-15-2009 05:13 PM

I got a half gallon through my GRP tuned and its really coming alive. We had a test and tune day at the track and I was getting 11 minutes @ 160 degrees. I know it will get 12 minutes once it gets broken in good and race tuned.

Miller_Time 02-16-2009 05:21 AM

Has anyone heard about the new pricing plans or distribution? I plan to get one but definitely want to wait for their price drop.

I have had 3 of these engines and they all seem to run around the 200 mark 190 to 220 with pleanty of smoke out of the pipe. Tuning to temp can be dangerous. Tune to smoke and performance and use temp as a check just to make sure you are in the right direction.

Miller_Time 02-16-2009 07:51 AM

What about breaking one in, should you still try to get to around 230F? I guess you would need to do some pre-heating and wrap up the head if so?

Quietman 02-16-2009 02:49 PM

How can you tell if your piston is black what does it mean is is too rich, but the engine has run 5 gallons + with compression

This weekend i was running the best lap times i have ever ran. Motor came in after warm up at 141, and after a 10 minute qualifier, at 148

bustedpiecesrc 02-16-2009 07:26 PM

there is no real date on when the 40% is actually going to take effect? I would like to know Thanks

tristyn 02-16-2009 07:41 PM

Adam,
The Losi site describing the GRP needle settings has me confused on the LSN setting. The above pictures showing individual needles says the LSN should be .045 in from flush and the lower pictures showing the individual engines, say the LSN should be .045 out from flush. Can you please post which way it should be in or out .045.

Thanks

Adam Drake or any knowledgeable tuner,

My GRP tuned engine had a gargling sound at idle. I didn't really know what to do with the tune. It seemed to run away a little after revving, indication of a lean lsn.
But at the same the gargle sounded like the lsn was too fat. I was running the GRP #4 plug. 50 degrees outside.

After comparing my measurements to the stock measurements, I discovered my lsn is back at .045(rich), my idle is at .042. I think I tuned my way into a false idle by opening the idle gap and running a rich lsn. I'm used to setting the top needle and then setting the lsn. I might have to change my tuning style with this engine.

if you read back through this thread ...you will see kinda how you tune this motor backwards in a way from others....if you go back to stock settings and retune ...you will probably be better off stock settings are

hsn 3.5 turns out from bottom
lsn 6.25 turns out from bottom

hope that helps

RyyRyy 02-17-2009 11:30 AM

what restrictors are you using that get you 10+ minutes on a tank????

cjm1126 02-17-2009 11:41 AM

i liked the 6.5 restrictor the best on this engine when i was running it, had good power and run time

John Schafer 02-17-2009 02:44 PM

Anyone try a X-tech Big Boy pipe on the GRP .21 or .28? I'm considering buying this pipe or the O.S. Ninja pipe. Any recommendations???

I currently have,
JP-1
MSR 1005
O.S. 2050
9886

Hellsavage 02-17-2009 03:02 PM

OS 2050 without adoubt
I was testing one day and thought lets try someting different. So I put the 2050 on it.
I never took it of again great power and graet millige.

John Schafer 02-17-2009 03:11 PM

One problem with that, I'm using the 2050 on my truggy now with a differant engine that really needs that pipe. Wanting to run my GRP .21 in my buggy for now. Just looking for a new pipe that is strong and gets good milage.

Going to mount the GRP.28 in my truggy in a month or two. I can switch pipes around then.

the best pipe is the grp 2053 on a buggy from what i can tell ...also the 053 pipes are very similar to the 2053 ...the 2053 is more restrictive ...so the 053 wont get as good a milage ...i may swap over to my 053 as im running the .21 on truggy ...the 053 will open the motor up a little more with a sacrifice on milage....people are getting upwards of 13 minutes on this motor with the grp 2053 pipe running buggy ...why mess with a good thing ....

edfmaniac 02-21-2009 12:22 PM

I noticed that in Drakes article on how to tune these motors, they come shimmed for 30%. I've always liked running 20% just because I feel it's easier on the whole drivetrain. Is it ok to run 20% without removing the shims and what will that do to the tuning? I'm running the promo pkg so y'all know which plug and pipe I'm using.

Quietman 02-21-2009 12:41 PM

Any one know when the e shop will be online?

losi8lunie 02-21-2009 01:02 PM

let me know when it is ...

anyone saying that this grp .21 tuned wont push a truggy ...needs there head examined ....pushed my jammin x2 to 2nd place today at a local club race with a few fast guys in there ...ran flawless all day ...plenty of power even on the loamy track conditions we ran ....running an odonells 97t plug grp pipe on 25%byrons gen2 ....never came off the track over 185-190 ....really impressed with this motor having raced it for the first time

Miller_Time 02-21-2009 07:40 PM

Does anyone know what size carb restrictor comes on the .21 promo kit setup? If I'm reading the online manual correct it's 8mm? I wanted to get some smaller ones when I order the engine.

julius_makewar 02-21-2009 07:44 PM

My Promo Kit tuned .21 came with aall the restrictors.
Cheers

Miller_Time 02-21-2009 07:45 PM

Oh - very nice, thanks!

zixxer 02-21-2009 08:03 PM

If you want to buy a single carb restrictor just look for the old ninja engine parts on A-main. They aren't that cheap but if you just need a specific one.

Quick question for anyone that has the GRP engines running them in a RC8. I thought I read somewhere that you need to get some setback eng mounts to get everything lined up and was just checking to see if this is correct?

Miller_Time 02-23-2009 06:19 PM

Just got my .21 tuned promo kit :sneaky: Getting ready to install now.. tomorrow, the break in begins. Pretty psyched about this one!

I run it in my RC8 but I can't say because I run the Xtreme 2 piece mount and I don't have any probs with it.

Franchize04 02-24-2009 01:12 AM

Alan Burton,

If you plan to come to Arkansas with Jeremy this Saturday, can you pm me and let me know. I might need a little tuning help my GRP. This thing doesn't tune like anything I've ever owned.

Yep the GRP plug that was installed was dead out of the box :flaming: Got through two tanks of idling so far without any real problem.

i use os plugs, i blew thru 2 grp plugs during break n, and since ive been on the same os plug and i have about 2 gallons on my grp. im going to switch to a p4 plug tho so it will have a new plug. My dads grp blew its grp plug on the first tank. grp makes GREAT motors but there plugs need work for the money you spend on them

mattwoodcraft 02-25-2009 01:11 AM

These grp tuned engines are the bomb extremeley happy  look good good price with what you get in the promo kit cant complain at all  so much better than my os v engines i usually run :)
