OK guys - here is hopefully what will be the final twist in the tail on the coating saga.
I have just come off Skype with Simon at GO. They have just come back from the New Years holiday, which is why he didn't get back to me sooner. He told me - The crank is coated, as is the rod, liner and piston. A very special coating similar to what OS have used on some of their motors. That's what I would consider a definite answer to my question, from the co-designer (if not the primary designer ??) of the new GXII motor, and the man on the spot in the hot seat who is overseeing production, sending the sample motors out and making the calls on this one. I don't know why all the mis-information on these forums lately, but it's getting very hard to get a straight answer these days. |

THX for the info on the potential 7 port engine.
They had a "cut in half" demo model of the new engine at the toy fair, too. And I was given the RHO for further inspection. All I can say is "Wow" The engine looks really amazing in reality - even far better than the pictures might let you think. With that being said, I can't wait to mount one of these in my chassis. Snow is all gone and the temperatures are rising slowly. One can literally smell the spring (aka burnt nitro) coming. :D |
One way to tell if the crank is coated or how effective the said coating is, is to throw the crank onto a milling machine and see how easily or difficult it is to machine.......If the crank is hard it will be extremely difficult to machine, if its soft the cutters will slice it like butter......It is amazing how much harder some brands are then others...variances likely between 40c and 60c depending on the brand in question....

when it was said that the coating is similar to what o.s. uses on some of there mills. are we talking similar to DLC coating?
|
I guess the lesson here is to not take anything as final, unless shane or I confirm it with Simon.
As for the crank, with physical inspection, its either harder, polished, coated, or a combination. Although the intake and intake duration timing on the crank may be the same -I do not have the tools to measure this- the leading edge counterweight is a bit different than the GX. The overall shape is quite similar to the gx, and I can see how a lot of parts will retrofit. |

Hi,
Yesterday I put my GX5R Buggy Engine on my Truggy to test the performance during the first round of local championship. I was surprised at the end of the day with the results obtained, it is amazing the power this engine develops. I ran over to other "supposedly" more powerful engines as the OS .28 ZX. I definitely recommend this engine for anyone who wants to run a truggy or buggy. |
