DVP where did you purchase the engine? The older engines came with that setup one .2mm shim and one .1mm shim. It really works fine and my current engine is one out of the same batch. Everything about the engine is the same as the newer batch except the head shimming. You may want to pressure test the carb for the air leak issue. I will shoot you a pm

Satoch the newer versions of the engine include a slightly higher deck ht. This was done to make the engines easier to tune and improve reliability. they feature one .2mm alumn. shim and two .1mms shims.

Russell,

I have been noticing a lot more of the 8.5's winning races lately. Might be time to take a closer look.

Colin next time I see you at the track I will let you take it for a spin, its a lot of fun to drive, it accelerates like the Losi but can be pushed harder.

I will second that, I started running an 8.5 from a losi and I can accelerate away from anyone (with a stock 3prt).. car is very stable and can be driven easy or hard

Grudinger there should be 2-3 shims installed and 1 in a bag in the box. It should have .3-.4mm of shims included, if you need some shims please let me know.

Russel it seems that GO has some issues on quality control on these engines.
Although they do seem to correct issues like carb leaks and such but i have read all posts for these engines and i never found a post that backs up the previous one.
Opinions on head clearance fly everywhere and i believe we need a post with GO engines line up and their correct head shims and clearance no matter what shims the engine has in the box because i believe the number of shims might be a wrong from the engine assembly and packaging.

And of course it's a TURBO This is what i will start off with for breakin and testing.

Vti-chris, I am not sure what you mean. The factory has made a few changes to the heads and deck ht. reccomendations do vary from location to location. Since I have been importing the engines there have been only 3 deck ht. changes. The first batch included 3 shims with a total width of .5mm, They then added .2mm into the button and removed 1 shim. so the overall squish was the same but the engine only had 2 shims with a width of .3mm. The final change is recent and they added 1 shim so the shim width is now .4mm and they include a extra shim for break in, but that is up to you if you wish to use it. The last change was to increase reliability by making the engines easier to tune and also lowering the risk of detonation because they were at the min. deck ht. for 30% nitro.

There were very few of the original deck ht. engines sold in the U.S. and all of them had the original alumn. carb. I currently run the middle deck ht. engines and have never had a problem, but a few people had experienced blowing an few plugs during break in because of the deck ht. I haven't had a single complaint from the latest batch.
