Not quite sure where you put the 1mm spacer though. Perhaps a photo would help.

I agree with Robert M.. I clean it up when it stops shifting smoothly and consistently. You should probably change it after a full year of racing to be safe.

The whole shoe assembly is like $15 total including the metal holder. It's not something that normally breaks but it's so cheap that it almost doesn't hurt to have it as spare. If anything should happen to it, it's a pack your bags and go home type part.
