Diff Balls: Should I invest in ceramics?

Anyway, to get to the point of this post... My rear pod slides back and fourth 2-3 mm and I narrowed it down to the ball that connects it in the middle of the chassis... I cannot get it tight at all.. How are you to tighten that down but yet keep it free?

If you dont think that is what is causing the wiggling, please post back! Thanks

fried diff- Did you try and spray out your bearings and then relube them with thin oil? What part can't you get tight? Is it the 4-40 screw that screws into the ball or the 2-56 screws in the socket?

Preston-check out the Snowbirds race page on the 1st page of RC tech. There should be a couple of pictures of Ron Atomic's car in there.

I'm trying ceramic diff balls right now (also from RC4less) and are really liking them. Super smooth and a long time between rebuilds. I've heard rumors that ceramic balls shorten the life of the rings, but I haven't seen any of that yet. The cost is quite a bit more expensive than normal steel balls, so you have to decide if the extra cost is worth it to you.

If you're having troubles tightening up the pivot ball to it's socket using the 2-56 screws you can sand a little material off of the bottom socket where it touches the top one. Be careful not to remove too much or the pivot ball will bind.

CRC tires work, I'm running some now, you just need to space them a little different. For TRC tires you will need to get some flanged bearings.

take care

john, so only jaco tires are direct fit?

I have one bad bearing in my 3.2 and I used the stock diff with great success. It is nicer than the IRS.

Thats my .02

FriedDiff 12-10-2004 07:38 PM

Well, I just really really pushed really really hard on the top of the pillow ball and I got it as tight as possible like that and it seems fine.. Guess we'll see! Anyway, as for diff balls... Should I get some??

I am using stock diff! I have switched around all the bearings in the rear to get the quietest combination.. all sound like a couple grains of sand are in the bearings...

Where can I pick up very high quality 1/8" ceramic diff balls?
