Cub86 posted the question: Hi. I'm struggling to understand the lay down situation. I run on high bite damp smooth clay and think the conversation would help on my surface but from what I'm reading I need to buy the lay down kit tlr338004. And the dirt gear case tlr332063. But do I really need both from what I've read the dirt case is 1-2mm higher anyway and u don't use the +3mm hubs or the front pivot hrc or Hrc mod. So is the dirt lay down kit tlr332063 is all that's needed to get me a lay down set up that's suited for clay With the components and car I already have. And if I only get the dirt case is there any problems that will need to be addressed IE.. bone plunge . I do know I'll need 1mm spacers on the waterfall to clear the battery. Thanks guys really trying to get my head around this.

Franks response:
Laydown Conversion will work great by itself. You run the aluminum +3mm hubs, the diff is +3.5mm, and you run the HRC front setup. Just follow a setup sheet from tlracing.com (Frank Root).

Dirt Tranny has the diff at the same height as the standard tranny case, and works with the standard plastic hubs. Both are +/- 0mm from stock. When you run this, no need to run the HRC front mod either.

I've found the stock laydown conversion parts to work great for most tracks. The dirt tranny is a great tuning option, but definitely not 'required'.

Something I made, pretty basic. Just to give people an idea.

With the aluminum rear hub carriers, is the TLR logo supposed to face the front of the car or the rear?

Yes. Steering is good with bobcats on the front. Also no problems with slicks at the 2 other tracks I go to. I usually just adjust the rear of the car.

Any idea if the Laydown transmission will be compatible with the kit chassis? Just got a 3.0 for carpet and would hate to need another chassis and such.

Wonder if they've tested this at OCRC (where they seem to do quite a bit of testing), and whether they preferred the laydown over the normal configuration for that type of grip.

Frank?

Considering the trans kit comes with a new chassis, I assume they are not interchangeable.

Saw on 22 Empire FB group Frank mentioned it has to do with the rear axle locations.

The conversion kit includes the chassis, as the holes are different.

Frank?
We haven't run it at OCRC, but I have run it at Coyote Hobbies. It carries more corner speed, but has less forward grip (duh...lol), so you need to be running a) on a track that has the natural grip to create the forward grip or b) run stock where forward grip isn't quite as critical.

I'll have two cars, and will be doing a lot of running and testing to continue to learn more. Most of the testing so far has been on carpet and astro.

I think you might have that confused with a comment I made regarding the -3 chassis for the SCTE.

The lay down is chassis is different for two reaons - 1) reduced pocketing to reduce flex and 2) different holes were needed for the laydown tranny.

I go with thicker oil in the back on higher bite. Bfg having less grip I soften it up to get the weight to go back. I leave the front alone and just set the ride height in the front.

With a layout change that happened in the last week, there is one pretty big feature at bfg now and I have been playing with the 2.0 and I had to redo the front and rear oil and pistons. Haven't ran the 3.0 on it yet. Few of us have been playing with 3 vs. 4 gears there. But the 3.0 is good everywhere. Just trying different things to keep it interesting till the rear motor cars come out for outdoor.
