At Mikes Hobby Shop in Porter Tx, there is regularly 8-10 teknos now. I have yet to see or hear of any broken parts except the shock shaft I broke last week. I believe any of the issues seen here are isolated incidents, besides the over hardened batch of axles.....

I have been in RC a long time and have rarely seen a manufacturer admit that they have produced a substandard part. It happens to them all,but most just ignore it and turn a deaf ear to the racers that have a problem. Others announce the new "Race" version you can buy to replace the poorly designed part they put in the kit.
For Tekno to man up and jump right on the problem and publicly announce that some stub axels may have been overhardened is commendable. For them to stand behind their product and offer to "make it right" proves they are a class act and in my estimation sets them a level above the rest of the pack. I'm just an old man playing with a very expensive toy car, but for what it's worth you have certainly earned my respect!!! |

Quick question for you Tekno guys. I drove Kuya's and loved it. The Tekno has been doing very well at my local tracks too. My buddy was in the market for a new 4wd sct and I recommended it to him after having driven one as I myself was thinking about purchasing one. But he's broken 3 axles so far in less than 2 or 3 full battery packs (I know, I did read that there were or may have been a bad batch of axles and and yes Tekno is taking care of you guys who've had the axle issues). He's getting frustrated about the axles and then he actually broke an outer rear hingepin when working on it to put in the new axles. I keep telling him to hang in there, these are just teething problems and should be expected of any new vehicle to a certain extent. But now that he broke the outer rear hingepin, I'm getting gun shy as to whether or not I want to go this route. No shops or tracks in our area are carrying parts for this truck yet. So now that he has a broken hingepin, he's faced with either not racing this weekend while he waits for Tekno to send him one or he could use a hingepin off of another brand that may fit. I guess my question here is, has anyone else broken hingepins? He hasn't driven the truck very hard, he's only got a half a battery pack of "getting to know you" time in practice, then 2 heats of racing (broke axle near the end of second heat), a couple laps of practice at another track and broke another axle, fixed it, then finally broke a 3rd axle after he replaced that one in less than a full pack ending his race day before it even started. I have faith in the truck and that Tekno's going to get through this. He doesn't have the same faith that I do and is contemplating selling it for a SCTE 2.0. Anyone know of which hinge pins he can use in the mean time to get him back on the track for the weekend? So far, he's missed 2 weeks of racing due to the axle issue and lack of replacements available. His truck we think is a second batch truck. First batch if I'm right, doesn't seem to be having these same issues, but I could be wrong. Come on guys, help me keep him in the drivers seat of his Tekno! I keep telling him he's just had some bad luck and going to love his truck once the wrinkles are ironed out, but his patience is wearing thin. BTW, He has spoken with Tekno and they did send out axles to him that were definitely different than the ones in the kit or the ones he got from Amain, so hopefully those wont break. But the Hinge pin deal has me scratching my head as I haven't heard any issues about them yet. But i don't follow this thread that closely either. Thanks for the help.
I used a losi hinge pin. It was 1/8 x 2.03" for the size. The local hobby shop had a couple of different options. There was two lengths that were in teh 2.xx range and I chose the smaller one. It came in a package of two. I may not be exact on the size, but it is JUST right over 2". maybe these ( http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...ins1-8-x-20625 ) There are other sizes it looks like that may work and be shorter. I think I measured slightly over 1.5". I think Losi has a 1.9" size but i haven't found a 1.6" size I then just used some plastic washers to take up some space and then I bought the package of the losi 1/8" e-clips to hold the ends. I used 3 spacers per side. I probably have 20-25 packs through it at this point and no issues. Ironically it has better movement in relation to the hub and arm since you don't need to tighten down on the nuts. Its not pretty, but with the wheel on no one will notice and atleast I can race and if the clips fall off, or I break another one, or whatever... I atleast know I can run into the hobby shop and race again quickly. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ps4340d967.jpg |

There is another way to repair the hinge pin problem until you get a new one. Drill a small hole in the pin area of the arm and put in a set screw, grind a small flat spot on the axle for the set screw like the older Associated cars had.

I know it is in here somewhere, but i have the J concepts High Flow raptor body that has divots to mount multiple SC styles, if I just ream the losi holes this will work

Since there isn't any racing here with 1/8 e-buggy much I took all the light parts from my EB48 and put them on my SCT410 after a bit. I will say the truck is much harder to drive for me at least this way. Coming from an SCRT10 to an SC10 4x4 and now this truck I would think it would be better lighter, but thats not the case. Ive heard several others say the same thing. I now have the stock chassis back on and got my truck ready to run at just about 6 1/2. Its much more forgiving. I just keep thinking back to how I wanted to add weight when I was running my SC10 4x4 and realized I dont like light trucks.
If you like to through the vehicle around and drive it aggressively go for lighter, if your like me and like the weight of it to help keep it calmer stay close to stock. |
for the whole lightening thing and how well it handles, etc. part of me wonders if when doing this we need to look at certain areas to lighten versus others. To me at least, if I go this route I would probably start with anything that is high up in the air relative to the chassis, which, I would leave as is personally.
Heck, the concept I am thinking of had me purchase a stock SCT410 again after the fiasco with that one ebay purchase to use on my EB48. I am very interested though in some graphite shock towers. |
All this talk about rear hingepin holders makes me nervous. I think i'm just gonna install the aluminum one and be done with it. I've only broken the front/front hingepin holder, but tekno was gracious enough to include and aluminum replacement in the box. I think all these axle issues/hingepin issues are just what happened to the eb48 when it came out. I'll bet tekno will have these issues fixed within a month or 2. What people need to understand is that this is tekno's 2nd vehicle, there are going to be a few issues @ first. At least it won't take them 3 years to fix something that should have been fixed before the vehicle's release.....cough....cough...losi.
|
Anyone heard anything else from tekno about offering the hingepin holders in singles?
If you were to replace one of the two rear holders, which would you do or will either give enough support? I could raid my EB48 for its RF or RR one if it doesn't matter. |
Just for the record for people on the axles.. I have a first gen car from amain and I'm on stock axles with at least 30 packs thru the car now. Only thing broken was a spindle and that was with a bad landing on a high speed off camber jump. All has been 110% the past few weeks.
|
yeah, I think the axle thing will be solved soon. who knows, probably already is. With Tekno's customer service to boot, guys will be a-ok for sure.
