This past weekend was the WA state titles for 2007. I won this title last year and was hoping for a good showing again this year.
Day 1: Friday Practice - I spent a lot of time helping others get to grips with the circuit and setup. I ran my car a couple of times and felt it was ok. Running the stratus body gave more mid corner grip than the Mazda body I had been running so i was happy with that. I thought things were going ok at that stage.
Day 2: Saturday Qualifying rounds 1, 2 and 3 - I had a little trouble getting a clean run. There seemed like there was more traffic to deal with in the 10 minute heats. Probably just my imagination. After these 3 rounds of qualifying I was 3rd fastest and there was only 5 seconds covering the top 3 and only3 tenths between me and second place.
Day 3: Sunday Qualifying rounds 3 and 4 and finals - In the final 2 qualifyers, I couldn't improve my position and would start 3rd from the grid. Unfortunately, I committed the cardinal sin of crashing in the warmup and had the rear wing come off the car! I was so mad with myself. By the time I called for a 10 minute delay, it was too late so the race started without me and I was in the pits putting my rear wing back on.
So I started the race some 6 or 7 laps behind and I just thought that being 30 minutes long anything could happen so I just drove as hard as I could. I had a little luck with a couple of the leaders dropping out, so the more I passed some cars I was able to work my way up to 3rd with about 7 mins to go and I held on to 3rd. In terms of car speed, I felt that I had a car good enough for 3rd anyway had I started with everyone else so I was ok with the outcome. There was only .02 secs between the three fastest laps of the race and mine was the 3rd fastest so it looks as though 3rd was going to be it for me.
I had a great time and really enjoyed the longer race meeting. Time to regroup and get back into the championship groove and then look forward to the Nationals in October.
