SC10 4x4 Thread
At one point, I had some weird noises comming from the rear of my truck. I tore it down in between heats, and found nothing. I later found that one of the bearings in the rear hub was making the noise. Just a thought.
I haven't driven my 4x4 for 3 weeks because of this exact problem. This clicking noise came out of no where. Only makes noise on first hard acceleration but disappears once the truck was moving at speeds It's embarrassing and drove me nuts. Thought it was my clicker so I replace all parts but didn't fix. I too realized it was coming from the rear. Pinion and spur were fine. Replace belt gear but still clicking. Thought maybe idler gear. Opened diff but everything looks fine Bought replacement idler gear anyway but have come accross these recent posts on pinning. So I did this mod since tranny was pulled. Also replaced belt.for insurance. Haven't run it yet still reassembling. Hope it's fixed.
I noticed some wear at the edges of the sun gears. The mesh between the planet and sun gears must of opened up. I added a shim under the sun gear and I'm hoping that'll fix it.
i must have the only trouble free sc10 4x4 out there .
1 i am pinned with 19 tooth pulley
2 MTK clutch basket
3 braced
4 RPM arms front and rear
5 factory team shocks front and rear
6 powered by RX8 pro4 4000 62/13 Orion carbon pro 6500 90C normal setup
with 28 grams left front and 24grams right front of servo
all original gears in the transmissions i run 3k front 5k rear and my truck is so quite you can hardly hear it
i do know that some other guys around here are also having issues with noise and such but their noise it do to lack of maintenance neglect

Nope, my truck is problem free as well, I'm pinned, rcshox garodiscs, 22.5k f+r shocks, ae front and rear arms, all stock internals, one idler gear was replaced due to my stupidity as well as belt, again my stupidity, other then that, this truck has ran like a beast. Rx8 with a pro4 4600kv 13tpinion 62spur, love this truck. love the pin mod, great difference and to those who don't like it, cool, but don't trash it when others see great results, it's as someone else pointed out, a tuning option, not every tune works for every individual, but for most it does!
I'm dealing w/ the same thing. On accerleration out of corners. A handful of nasty clicks, then it's gone.

Jason has raced his every weekend since about a week before the truck was available to the public. For the first couple months it was great. On the fourth of July it threw belt and started making noise. For the next month or so I replaced belts, idlers, bearings and checked everything. Noise kept coming from the gearbox and it would throw belts and I just kept at it hoping something in the diff would finally break so I could figure it out. At the Futaba Electric Challenge the truck finally locked up the rear diff and shot off into a pipe. Grabbed the rear wheels, saw they were locked, spun them hard to unlock them, threw it back down. Jason made about one more lap and it did it again.
Took the rear diff apart and could actually finally see the teeth on the sun gear polished on the top edge. Side gear washers were also pulled and concave. The bushing in the diff case showed about a .010 difference from inside to outside. I ended up replacing the diff cases and gears. Also double shimmed the side gears. Also was very important to use spacers in the shocks so that the outdrives would not be forced up on full suspension travel. Everything is now good. No more noise. Belts stay on.
Keith.
thanks for the reply, Which ones are the side gears?

Honestly. that's a stupid comment. Unless:
Option 1: You're intending that statement to include your driving habits, skill, handing, and style. Then be my guest.
Option 2: It's a general statement, then: You're a tool.
(The possibility that you are not a tool is by choosing option 1, and option 2's resulting 'tool position' is void, and only applies if option 2 is chosen. Summary: You should only be offended by this post if you chose option 2. )

This is true. IIRC, you caught a bunch of flack for your trouble then too.
Now I'm confused.
Are you talking about the planetary gears (the four gears that rotate on the cross shafts)?
After you changed the diff housing (the ones with the bronze bushings) do you think the extra shimming will keep them from prematurely wearing out, or do you think you can "save" a worn out set by shimming them?
And BTW, thanks for your participation here. Having a guy who just turns wrenches for a dedicated driver gives a totally different (and useful) perspective.

Did you use 2 more stock sun gear shims? 1 more on each outdrive?
Cameron K.: What gearing do you run with your 6.5T 540?
CraigMBA: I run a 6.5T 540 as well with a 13mm rotor and a 17 pinion stock 48pitch spur, it comes off at 110 after 6mins every time. I am going to try a 18 tooth this weekend.

thats exactly how I stopped mine from making that clicking noise . I chased all kinds of stuff before I figured out how to fix it .its perfect now .
He liked it but when I put the OD front pulley and 0 toe his times fell off. Chad drove his truck and said it pushed like a dump truck and wondered how Jason kept it off the back wall.
Swithched to a standard front pully and 1 degree toe in. Practiced at Monroes new track last Sunday and seemed better. I have the pin mod from Billy coming so I can switch between coupled and uncoupled quickly. Will test this weekend.
It is a few weeks off but the Spektrum race will have these drivers in attendence:
From TLR/Spektrum:
Dakotah Phend
Dustin Evans
Matt Chambers
Mike Truhe
Kevin Gahan
Matt Castellano
Dyno Dan Hissam
From Team Associated/Reedy:
Ryan Cavalieri
Brent Theilke
Chad Due
Kody Numendahl
and
BRIAN MELLOW
Kyosho/Orion:
Joe Pillars
Shaun Dunlap
This should give us a good chance to see what the truck can do on a known surface.
I will try to post what works out the best for Jason and the team.
