Default Engine Keeps Dying

Monty,

First let me tell you I just bought a new Nova 21-4C for racing next year, so I'm back in the Novarossi family.

Anyway, I'm hoping you may be able to help me. At a huge race last weekend, my GRP tuned .21 engine in my 8ight 2.0 buggy completely died on the 1st lap of the 1st qual. Both I and everyone else (including Ryan Maifield and his tech guy) thought it was the glow plug because it would run on the starter box with the plug ignitor on it, but then it would die once I took it off. I replaced the plug with a new one 3 different times (two P3's and tried a P4), but it kept dying once I took the ignitor off.(I'm in Florida, so the outside temp isn't an issue) The engine only has about 3 1/2 gallons through it, fuel pressure is perfect, it used to run very strong and has plenty of pinch left. Needless to say, I'm baffled.

I want to keep this as a back-up engine for next year, so if you have any idea or suggestions what could be causing this, I'd be extremely grateful!

bearings or rod? i ran the "old" mr ninjas and never encountered that problem. did you make sure there were no air leaks? what did the first plug look like when you pulled it? are both exhaust gaskets in good shape?

Monty when I set the idle gap with a 6mm insert, should it be set with the insert in or out? I always set it around 1mm with the insert out, but I was told to set it with the insert in. What is your opinion?

Monty in a post back some pages, you made it seem as though the older carb style was better. I'm a little ignorant on what the difference is, but I have had some of the random flameout issues. I also have a couple vspec carbs laying around. Would they help with the random flameouts, or would I have the same issues? Thanks for your advice and opinions.

Well clebo I will tell you that its worth a shot , will it guarantee that you never flame out again ? NO.

Some people swear by OS carbs and some people swear by nova carbs . I feel you should give it a shot and see if it helps you . Make sure you chamfer the bottom edge of the nylon ring around the OS carb so it does not rip the oring in the block of your novarossi engine. That oring is very important !!!

The guy at my LHS tells me that the EFRA 2015 pipe is the new hot ticket. What are the characteristics if that pipe. Also I am pitting together a Losi 8 2.0. I am planning on getting a plus 4. I mostly will be racing at revelation in So Cal which is a pretty big track. What pipe and header would YOU recommend, also with the so cal weather what plug, 77T ?
