Thinking about picking one of these up, is it true it needs a special set up station?

Define "special". You need a setup station that can do caster.

Any setup station will work, some setup stations are not compatible with mugen caster pointers tho, basically you'd want an Hudy or hudy's clones setup station

Nowadays with the turnbuckle style upper arms you need a castor doodle.

Also over the past couple years the old style of measuring droop / uptravel has been updated. Nothing wrong with the old way but if you are into reading setup sheets, you kind of have to use the same tool that the sheet was taken with.

What was the old way and how does it compared to the new way?

Now that we have the car and we’ve been working on it, how does everyone feel about the graduated shock mount, and arm links?

The old/old way on a TC was with a ride height gauge that had droop steps on the back. I'm sure guys still use those. 1/5mm is common resolution now so a purposed droop gauge was the tool for a long time measuring an arbitrary point on the suspension.

Nowadays most drivers are using a hub mounted reference dongle. It's a little better tasked to measure uptravel and makes the droop/uptravel numbers somewhat applicable between all cars (it is not of course).

Mind you if you are old like me in the old old old days there wasn't a droop limiter. You played with your shock lengths and if you wanted to limit uptravel (didn't really need to back in the day) you used orings. So the process and the method didn't lend itself to 1/5mm measurement, although I'm sure there were guys that tuned to 1/2mm even way back.

It makes tuning easier and faster. There are a lot of times when you make a change, lets say with shims, and lose time or forego a change because of a lack of time. Gives you more time to practice and work on other things.

Building my first MTC3 and I have an Xray servo saver mounted to a Proteck 160tbl. Using the top hole of the servo saver like it was used in the X4 the linkage hits the top deck. Are you guys moving to the middle hole, or using a different servo saver?

i’m not using a servo saver. What is the distance between the output shaft center in the center of the hole you are putting the ball in?

About 19.5mm.

I went back through this thread and saw a pic of a car with the Xray servo saver. Looking from the front of the car he is using the upper left mounting hole which gives 17mm. This should fix my issue.

Leave the posts longer, leave the holes on the back and use the brackets along with the post, allows you to use the pins. Problem solved. I loved those brakets, and theyre only a few bucks.

Volker suggests to use a 15-16mm long servo horn

If you have access to a basic 3d printer, I've uploaded on makerworld . com the 3d mount I've been using since day zero. Plenty of crashes, various bodies, they're good enough I'm using a similar thing on pretty all the other cars now. It's basically a 2pcs version of the original one, with the plus you can customize the thickness without having to go crazy with spacers to raise the body.
I also machined a carbon fiber version, but it's a waste of time and money. It blings of course...
