What is the benefit from running no fan? I have this esc and 3 rx8 gen2's and just always had the fan on all of them and set to auto. Is it just the weight savings or is there power to be gained?

Other than that, sure a few grams of the fan, a lower profile physically in the car, etc etc.
Nothing wrong with running the fan.

Well I'm having all kinds of issues with this RSX. When I dropped my car on the track on Friday the throttle glitches really bad. When I pick it up and revs no problem.
I've already changed the sensor wire and checked all the motor leads.
Also I'm running a 10A Castle BEC and if I unplug that and try to power up off the internal BEC of the RSX I get no power at all.
I just bought this back in June. Never had any heat issues with it or anything. Just all of a sudden stopped working.

If you start seeing led 6 and 7 lit up, grab a fan.
If you're coming off the track and it shows 4 led's after a full run, you're good.
You can use the data logger to verify your esc heat at the end, just make sure you clear the run before you test, so you're getting the latest data.

I don't run one at moment as stuff all clearance and room in a 4wd 1/10 buggy and it's nice to know what temp the esc runs out without a fan incase fan dies during a race etc.

I can try to rebind but I have my doubts that is the issue.
Yes I hooked it up to hotwire last night and didn't notice anything odd.
I had the external BEC from my last setup because my Novak esc couldn't power the high voltage servo I had. I kept it in there because I figured it would be less stress on the Tekin esc since it didn't have to use the internal BEC to power the receiver and servo.
I've been running this setup since the end of June with no issues.
I just did the sensor checker on the esc and very faintly I can see the 3 sensors firing off on the led display.

I have a Spektrum DX4R w/ SR2000 receiver. Yes recalibrating was the first thing I did.

One odd thing is when I remove the external BEC and try to power on the system from the esc, I get nothing. It was late so I'll double check this before tearing down.

Unplug the fan if equipped, unplug the esc from the receiver, unplug the sensor harness from the esc. Power up the esc? Does it light up?
If not it needs service. Contact [email protected]

As Randy and a couple others have said, you shouldn't need an external BEC. If you are running a HV Servo in your vehicle, you can access the settings in the RSX via a Tekin Hotwire and turn up the voltage to your servo.
The only time you should need a external BEC on a Surface RC is if you are running a cheap ESC and a servo that pulls a lot of power (IE: CC w/ Spektrum)
If its cutting out on you my guess would be a poor solder job on one of your main power wires. Give them a quick wiggle to see if they break loose or just recook them for a scond with a solder gun.

Ok, stop. If you have power going to the esc and it won't turn on this is the last test.
Unplug the fan if equipped, unplug the esc from the receiver, unplug the sensor harness from the esc. Power up the esc? Does it light up?

I've since switched to an Xpert 4431 servo so no need for HV now.
Yep, one of the first things I checked when it came off the track was the solder joints. They all appear to be solid and have been working fine for a few weeks.
Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the advice.

Local track is starting a 13.5 wheeler class. My question is about durability between the RSX or the Gen2. Would the RSX fair better because of the demands of a 4wd car or would it be over kill and the Gen2 would be plenty?
