The pics of the esc on the website are not etched......those are stickers, the production esc's will be etched.

Wildcat1971 06-11-2014 06:43 AM

oh, Danny posted on facebook that they were etched in the pics. Maybe me/him misunderstood

Yeah, I saw the ESC, looks very good! At first I thought it was a Hobbywing, but the specs look different (and good!). Maybe another Dualsky OEM? I don't know enough about those ESCs to say, but definitely tempting. I wonder if they'll offer "blinky only" and 12th scale versions eventually.

It's for sure not a hobbywing. The firmware is different along with the internals. The fets are very good and overall it's a nice unit.

Does SMC make a programming card for their ESC ?

yeah. No idea what it looks like, but the website says that is an option.

I know its not a hobbywing. But i am willing to bet its a hobbywing clone. The chassis layout it pretty much a copy. Software is just that, software. Based on what I saw on the SMC site, the software looks interesting. But here is that thing. SMC is a small company. Danny didnt write the firmware. And doubt the Chinese company making the esc made custom firmware just for him. It appears to be very similar to the new team powers esc. Anyway, just because its a clone or even a genuine HW, that is not a bad thing. HW are freaking great ESC's. They still have that low end stigma, even though they made the orions. I am sure Danny is going to release a good esc and give it great support. It looks like it has a receiver/programming port on the top. Is the receiver cable built into the esc and has a port for programming or is that the receiver port? I loved those receiver ports on the SP GT esc's. you didnt have to coil or hide the wires, just buy a blacked out receiver lead of the correct length and plug it in. Always made for clean wiring.

That's very well said. The price tag is right up there with the competition, though, so I really do hope the ESC is up to normal SMC quality standards and will thus further spread the company's reputation for quality products. Not that I want everyone knowing about the SMC secret, but they definitely deserve success.

ANyone have any recent feedback on these motors? I am looking to pickup a mod motor to play around with in a MM B5. Might get a 8.5 or 10.5, unsure.

Leigh i got a 17.5 in mine and have no problem keeping up Im not gonna say they are rocket ships but for 60 bucks im happy.
Everything they make is good stuff at a very good price. Depending on when the Reedy comes out and its price point this ESC is second in line for sure:D

bds81175 08-04-2014 08:10 PM

Anyone have a clue when the 8.5's are going to be back in stock?

Danny would not sell it if the quality wasn't there. Also this is basically a team powers esc but some of the internals(fets and such) have been upgraded to better stuff....Danny has been working with the manufacturer for a while on these.

Danny is in the process of developing a new motor with a different manufacturer. The current stock is all he has until the new motor is done. He is working very hard on this to make sure that it is right the first time. This new series of motors will be submitted to Roar for approval as well. He also assured me when this new motor comes out it will be just as good if not eve better than his current line up.

He says there is no current timeline for the new motors release, just that there is alot of testing going on and he said he will get them out as soon as possible but he is not going to rush things...he wants them to rock as much as we do.

Well, that sure is interesting news :) A hopefully ROAR approved SMC motor, I say go for it! We've read that the current SMC motors are manufactured by Dualsky, any word on who the new manufacturer may be?

WIGMAN 08-06-2014 07:10 PM

Danny likes the current motors but he said they are a pain to get product from. He said the new place will be much more reliable filling orders and yes the new motors will be submitted to Roar for approval.

I've been testing with the new SMC RF-160 ESC. Here's my initial setup. The one thing I've noticed is to get similar drag brake feel to other ESC's I need to run a little higher value. Typically I run between 10-15%. On this ESC I've been running running it a bit higher.

The firmware version the ESC ships with is version 1.1. Version 1.3 should be on the website soon.

General
- Motor: SMC 8.5 (2wd), SMC 6.5 (4wd).
- Firmware Version : v1.3
- Running Mode: Forward/Brake
- Low Voltage Cutoff: 6.5v
- Overheat Protection: On
- Motor Rotation: Forward

Brake
- Initial Brake: Drag Brake
- Drag Brake: 19% (2wd), 15% (4wd)
- Brake Force: 100%
- Brake Rate A: 20
- Brake Rate B: 20
- Switch Point: 50%
- Brake Curve: Linear

Throttle Settings
- Punch Rate A: 12 (2wd) 15 (4wd)
- Punch Rate B: 11 (2wd), 15 (4wd)
- Switch Point: 70%
- Throttle Curve: Linear
- Throttle Reverse Speed: NA

Throttle Boost
- Timing Boost: 0 deg (None)
- Start RPM: disabled
- End RPM: disabled
- Burst Rate: disabled

Throttle Turbo
- Turbo Timing: 0 deg (None)
- Start RPM: disabled
- Turbo Delay: disabled
- Activation Method: disabled
