Viper RC -

First Impressions suck, and I feel ya because it only takes 1 bad unit to make the other 9,999 look bad, but the VTX line is no joke.
If you get another opportunity to try one, you should do so with no reservations. I have yet to find someone who has driven a Viper ESC and said 'oh, I don't like that at all'.

you cant really base much on a sensorless setup. Racing = sensored and bashing = sensorles. At least in my mine. The copperhead was designed as a cost saver. Which is usually bashers. I dont work for Viper and cant say for sure that I am 100% correct. But no one really makes and markets a sensorless setup for racing. They say you can race with it. Does not mean its the best for racing. I think once you run sensored, running sensorless is a very hard thing to do. If they ever get sensorless to the performance of sensored, I am totally in. I had a motors sensor board go out and it killed me esc. I was like wtf. But people told me yeah, that happens often enough, but its normal. Of your sensor cable goes bad mid race and your car stops in the middle of the track. That blows also. HW and maybe tekin over come this with dual mode. HW for sure. I unplugged my sensor after powering it up. and it kept running, but started cogging. It dropped seemed to automatically drop its self to sensorless. I think the tekin might only work in the mode you set it for. So if you set sensored, it wont work if the cable fails. There is no perfect esc and everyone has failures. it is how they handles the failures that maters. So far viper offers me 90% of what I want with a great warranty and support. Tekin only offers me about 60% of what I want, but they also have good support, but 1/2 the warranty. Tekins are ok, but you will never convince me that counting led's and blinking lights is better than a progauge that also acts a servo and lipo checker. The fact you didnt like a sensorless system does not surprise me, but I would not have written off the entire company or product line.

Also make sure you are getting airflow through the body. You don't have to hack it up like crazy or anything, but a couple of vents will definitely help on the hot summer days.

the exception might be the sensorless setups. It is pretty common for drivers who driver sensored to hate sensorless after the fact. I have never owned a copper head, but feel free to throw one at me to test and review, lol. If someone local owned one, I would ask to drive their car. One guy has a vtx10r with the viper 4.5 550 in a scte. I would like to drive that. I might ask this weekend.

i need some help programming my vtx10r resc. It's in the blinky mode and runs fine. Only problem is I want to race mode class. I hooked it up to the programming card and i get a connection error every time. The little end plugs into the switch only 1 way, the end that pugs into the cards only lights up 1 way also. every time i get a connection error. I hooked it up to my lap top and it doesn't read the esc. Any idea's what i'm doing wrong? thanks

Are you racing club or large events? I was mainly pointing that at sponsored factory drivers. No the club folks. We have 3-4 traxxas that race with castles, velium and other sensorless 4 poles. They prefer sensored, but prefer the lower cost more, lol. When Cavilari and Maifield run sensorless, then I know the world is ending.

1) turn on radio
2) turn on esc
3) wait for it to fully boot up
4) push the button for about 1-2 seconds until the orange lights light up
5) plug in the PG
6) have fun with the viper esc.
If you plug it in before you enter the programming mode, you will get the failed to connect every time.

once you make your changes, you have to save them and then switch out of programming mode by pressing the ESC switch again. It will go back to green and then your changes will be saved.

I'll say this...the sensorless feel on my Copperhead is a lot closer to sensored than a lot of other ESC's i've tried, Velineon included.
Oh and I'm not a sponsored driver. I have to stay neutral for the purposes of my site. I just buy stuff and review it. If I like it, I keep it. If not, I sell it and use that to fund the next review.

yeah, I have heard many people that. When I was looking into SC 4x4, I was looking at that system because of that. Plus I only do club racing, a $300 system would do me no good. If I ever see one at the track, I will ask to test drive it. But unless it completely bad, how can you go wrong for $99 lol. Even I could stand a little cogging for that price.

lol, yeah. I always watch the sensorless trucks and I am like wow, they seem smooth enough. But then they come off the drivers stand saying how much cogging was going on, lol.

free of charge means......free of charge, lol. Plus the esc's are less than a year old, so ALL of them are under warranty, lol. /sarcasm off. Send it in if you want the upgrade and dont have access to a PC link cable.
