Unplug the esc from the receiver, power on, and see if you can get the ESC to make it's "chime" (confirmation that the ESC went all the way thru its cycle). If it does, try to load a new profile. If it loads, power it off using the button (Not by unplugging the battery), plug the esc in, and re-calibrate the ESC before doing anything else.

I have seen scenarios where people have had the ProGauge plugged in, made some changed, and unplugged it without saving or while it was saving and the ESC can loose it's calibration.

Basically, the ESC cannot see what it last knew was "neutral", so it won't finish it's power on routine. At least that is a place to start.

Any news on when the new 1/8 motors will come out?

nikos2002 01-09-2013 09:30 AM

In the works, but my guess would be towards summer at best - other developments in the pipeline first.

Got mine up and running today. Is there a way to tell what profile you are on by the lights> I switched to profile 2 I think just want to confirm.
The proguage is kind of a pita to remove from the vport also.

When you turn the unit on, it will go through a startup that includes the lights flashing to show what profile the unit is in.

Alright thanks they flashed twice so I think im good.

Now that I messed with the esc and progauge some more im really starting to like it. I put it on profile 8 for practice and upped the brake strength to 85% and added 10% drag brake. Im sure ill be tweaking it much more in the future.

Have any members of the public got feedback on the vtx8 yet? I'm especially interested in the bec and how it holds up in e8 buggies with high power servo's?

care to hint at what the other developments are ? :D

Ok, i'll ask again. Can you release a software/firmware version for the vtx8 to make it run sensorless as well?

No. The VTX8 is a sensored system only. The hardware and software are designed around that principle. A sensored system gives you many more technical advantages over an unsensored system. If you think about it the software alone in the VTX8 is optimized for 4 different applications of battery size and motor type -- essentially 4 different speed controls in one unit. Add in all the different adjustments and tools, like frequency adjustments and boost - yes boost for 1/8!! Its an awesome platform to work from.

It would be better if you could have a feature where it starts off sensored, then once you get going, it would go sensorless. I've heard that if you run sensored all the time it creates higher temps and less power. Tekin and castle have a feature like the one i listed above. How hard do you think it would be to develope something like that? Not trolling, love the esc, just getting the facts before i buy.

also, i wouldn't mind paying a little extra $$ for such a feature.

Just because another manufacturer ran into a wall with how they went about designing their equipment, it doesn't mean that the Viper system will suffer from it also. In my opinion, it is a problem that they probably ran into, which they had to develop a solution for, and they promote it as a "feature".

The truth of the matter is that 1/8 scale motors and ESCs are actually less complicated and easier to manage than the average 1/10th system.

As for either the VTX10 or VTX8 series ESCs, you will find the ESC itself runs much cooler than others based on the fact of how they are built. It's Viper's design, and that design is considerably different than anything else in the market.

With those differences, we don't see any issue what so ever in being able to run 100% sensored, 100% of the time.

Wildcat1971 01-10-2013 06:48 AM

I would never use Castle as a benchmark for esc's. They are pretty much terrible. I have run all of the major brands and some of the off brands. Vipers are better than or equal to anyone's track side tuning with the Progauge. The esc's have an all alum case for heat dissipation, small form factor, easy to solder posts and a 365 day warranty. To top it off they are priced slightly lower than LRP, orion, hobbywing and tekin. Also, they dont have a switch that if prone to turn off the car on hard landings like most people. My big issue with Vipers are: I dislike the color orange and I hate snakes. So orange snakes creep me out.
