That was a quick response! This thread is the reason I'm buying a Viper system. I have no concerns about customer service and performance!

From my limited experience the viper vtx10 is probably the best in its price range. Lots of tune ability. You can go from blinky to stock to mod profiles with a button push. The HW line are nice for the price but you need a laptop to go from blinky to stock or mod profiles. The orion are just HW clones. The LRP might be ok with the new Flow, but the BEC's have been lacking in the past. And Castle......LOL. The new reventons seem to be getting mixed reviews and the quality seems to be lacking. Plus the Vipers are from an American company and for me that adds value. Lastly, you cant beat the ease of the progauge for track tuning.....just push the red button....lol. The only thing I would have liked to have seen on the Viper vtx10's are drilled and tapped screw holes to easily mount a fan. Otherwise +1 for viper as my new favorite esc.

I would love to keep running Viper but I've been running a lot of 1/8 lately and the esc hasn't made it to the market

I was looking at getting the viper vtx10 8.5t combo for a sc10. I noticed on some pictures the caps are different on the esc. Is one a newer model? The picture on amain of just the esc has a black cap and the wires soldered to the esc but the combo pic the wires are not soldered and there are 2 silver caps.

the older VTX10 and VTX10R came with two 270uf (540 total) caps- the silver ones you described
the current ones come with two 470uf (940 total) caps- the black ones, currently in production
the current black ones are better obviously because of the added capacity, but as far as I know little change.
the black ones may have the newest software, but you can easily update the software with the PC link.
the Black Edition escs come three 1000uf caps (3000 total)

I ran the stock silver caps, no issues even with a high amp draw Savox servo. although, I did have an incident where my truck would turn on, but the RX would not get power, turned out to be a bad connection on the RX wire, but I swapped in the BE(black edition) caps to be safe. no noticeable difference IMO, but im running only 17.5

the newer ESC's (w/ black caps) come presoldered because there was apparently some issues with people soldering the wires to the esc.

Yes I have a pair of VXT10Rs, both with the older 270 uF caps and they have been fine...one running 17.5 blinky and the other first running a 13.5t boosted heavily and now running a 10.5t boosted slightly. Never a glitch and I also run a Savox.

my vtx10 says 470uF/25V*2. is this the newer stuff?

Yes that is correct.

Honestly the caps on the ESC aren't really glitch busters for the RX they are more for smoothing out the current delivery to the ESC itself. That said on the Vipers you have a 7V/5A which is way more than most ESCs provide. Set it to something like 6.0V-6.5V and don't even think about it because your servo won't tax that BEC one bit.

Great synopsis of the difference in the ESCs. I just wonder how precarious it is to replace your own caps being as wiring the ESC to connect to the motor caused enough issues, I can only see havoc with trying to solder those tiny little wires on the larger caps.

I'm running the older VTX10 w/silver caps and just like to be current so I wanted to get the black caps installed. I'm wondering how to go about accomplishing my goal as I can't solder 10awg wire, much less that wire going from the caps to the ESC.

If I were you, I'd put in the Black Edition caps since you're going to be soldering, and they are only 2 bucks more on Amain. Thats what I've done. Its a bitch to solder the cap board off the solder tabs of the ESC in my experience. Mine didn't come off in one piece, but Im sure it can be done with someone a little more talented at soldering then I. I recommend at least 45 watt iron for ESC's and motors.
soldering the BE cap set is just as much of PITA (I think the regular caps would be even worse) as removing, but with the BE you can simply remove the little bracket and solder the wires directly to the tabs, easily said and done I'm sure. I may try this tomorrow just to be sure it can be done.
One thing noteworthy is I think you have to run the A55 software with the BE caps or the updated caps.
