Salad dont let one ruin it for all of us wanting to see the new esc, motors look top notch.

any plans to release different rotors for the vst xl series motors?

flo006 09-21-2011 01:09 AM

Hi everybody, i m new in this forum...

I just bought a viper combo with vtx 10 esc and 8.5 motor to put in my xfactory x6. my problem is that the motor is very low I have no power (impossible to jump the double at my club when all my friend with speed passion and lrp 8.5 motor jump it easily) . my motor ran like a 10.5 or 13.5 with 23 pinion (I read good ratio is approximatively 9) the motor begin to work correctly with a 28 pinion (ratio 7.2) but with this ratio the motor temp is too high and power is not awesome.
that s my esc setup :
VTX10-Profile#2

Brake strength 80%
Brake PWM freq 8000HZ
Brake curve linear
Neutral drag brake 5%
Throttle PWM freq 9600Hz
Throttle punch 90%
Throttle curve linear
Deadband middle
no timing- default
no motor protection
no esc protection

Is it normal ? good motor for 2wd buggy is 6.5 with viper product ?
thank s for your advice and i hope my english was not too bad...

We do have plans on offering different rotor sizes, currently it's up to the market supply on magnets.

Hey Flo,

We have asked one of our XFactory drivers to chime in and see if he can give you a hand with gearing and your ESC settings.

Check your solder joints on your ESC and motor.

Hello Flo006,
Your English was fine :) I think I can help you out. First off, where are you running your X - 6? If you are on a dirt track, I'd start at 22/81 with a VST 8.5 motor, which is a 9.57 final drive ratio. On astroturf or grass I can't recommend a specific gearing, but I know gearing is usually a bit higher than dirt because the tires are smaller and lighter. Generally, I would start one pinion tooth smaller than what others are running LRPs at. The final drive ratio of an X - 6 is the same as a B4 or B4.1

I think the motor feels slow because you are not running any timing. When I first ran the Viper equipment I experienced the same thing you did - without the timing added I lacked power, so I geared up and that made things too hot. I added the timing back in and things got way better. Here are my settings for the VST 8.5:

Brake strength 88%, Frequency 5000 Hz, Curve -Exp2
Throttle punch 100%, Frequency 5000 Hz, Curve Linear
Deadband Narrow
Drag Brake 8%, Dynamic Brake 0%/disabled
Acceleration Boost: start 7500 rpm, finish 23000 rpm, max timing 20*
Top Speed Timing: slew rate 8*/1000 rpm, max timing 18*

I've attached all that in a set-up sheet to this post; this set-up was very easy to drive out of the corners, and really comes alive in the mid- and high-end powerband. I would adjust the drag brake % and top speed timings to suite the track.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

jessbens 09-21-2011 01:20 PM

put it on race mode so u can adjust the timing and rpm's

bart diaz 09-21-2011 02:39 PM

can you run the vtx10r with a one cell?

And Thanks Paul for the quick reply!!

I have been doing a lot of motor testing the last few days and came up with this for quick swaping of the motors. In a week of testing you would be surprised how much time in soldering this saves. :D

It's just 3mm bullet connectors seated into the post slots. Just fill one end of the bullet plug with solder, tin the post and place the bullet plug into the slot and heat with a good solder iron. Make sure your post are strait and use shrink tubing over the post.
