Which would you recommend, a modified A5 or R83 for GT?

Both would be very good, the R83 has a lower head and looks nicer.

I'll be doing some pipe&manifold testing in the following days with my new modified A5 (in GT), I'll drop the results here

Default R83

Just wanted to pop in and give an update. Long story short i am a high level racer who took some time off, when planning my return i reached out to Rex at rw-mods because he had helped me in the past. After speeking to him i ordered an Argus R83 and he lapped it in for me also. I decided to try a whole new breakin procedure and that went quick and worked well. So it was time to hit the track! I completed my breakin and got it tuned in quickly. So what did I think? This motor screams!! I am running it in my truggy with 0801 pipe. Some guys say they want a truggy to have real strong bottom and top matters less but i am the opposite. With buggy i charge hard into corner, get hard on brakes and hit the inside line and accelerate hard out of corner. However with truggy i tend to really hang it out and dont worry about inside line and tend to drift alot more because flipping over in ruts is much less likely. So with truck I maintain more overall speed accelerating less so i look for an engine with unlimited top end that never signs off. Well this R83 engine fits me perfectly it has plenty of bottom for my style and rips in mid and top. I have never ran an engine that pulled so long and never stopped pulling i am super happy with it. I look forward to racing this engine very soon. Thank you Rex👍

I haven't tried the R83 yet, but I can say the R8 is a awesome motor too. I run a spec R8 in buggy, and a modified one in Truggy. I have put my modified one in my buggy a few times, and in buggy, its super powerful. The modified R8 in truggy is a stump puller with great top end too. Customer service and pricing with Rex is Awesome. My R8 keeps up with some other modified's that cost double the price. And for you guys on the fence about Argus, look at how successful Ryan Lutz has been with Alpha. These are rebranded Alpha's like Novarossi Top and REX.

Yes, I've had my first international race with the Argus A5 GT last weekend. The engine pretty much outran almost all of the competition (R5 GT, Mito GT, Ison GT, ...), the top end is simply huge. I managed to put the fastest lap of the qualifying and finished 3rd in the final after a long fight against great competition. Trust me, the engine is unbelieavable

After a lot of pipe&header testing I decided to use an Alpha 2107 pipe with the long round Argus header (the one which you get in the Argus 2090 pipe combo). I will continue pipe testing but this works pretty good everywhere. Plug wise, I am using a Picco P7TH although the O'Donnell 299T also gave good results as well. I have some Novarossi C8TGHs to test next.

How's the pipe testing going? What would you compare the 2017 too. A high speed, mid range, or bottom end pipe?

In my opinion, the 2107 has more power than a 2090. In buggy, I'm undecided on 2090 vs. 2107 so I use both on different occasions but in my GT the 2107 is better. That being said, the header is the biggest difference, I've tried lots of them, from the short Nova 41032 (reccomended for their GT) to the long Argus header which works best (by far). The engine has huge top end, and the long header gives the much needed torque since the cars are so heavy. I've tried other pipes and manifolds, from different brands, nothing comes close to this combo with the RW modded A5 GT. Gearing is also very important in GT, so is track size.

Probably a Dragon III re branded? And I am fine with that. Just another motor to have an option to run.

Rex, are you going to get any R8's in stock. Been talking with others about GT and 2 folks have said a plus 2 is OK. MES are not considered ports. I had this discussion with ROAR myself and they said no MES but other folks are saying otherwise. I think ROAR is misinformed and ignorant at times. The R8 would be a better motor in my opinion for GT with additional ports and higher timing.

They are considered illegal by both ROAR and EFRA (had this confirmed by the 1/8th track chairman, for the R8/Alpha Lutz specifically). Only true 5 ports are allowed, which is the A5. I do agree clarification is needed, however their word is the final word. Surely you don't want to get an engine which is illegal at the ROAR races

It is no problem as the A5 modified can make just as much power as the R8. I am testing a R83 3 port with a mod for truggy this weekend.
