a good starting point if you get the carb out of whack with most pipe combos is 4.25 on lsn and 3.5 on hsn , approx. 1 full turn open from just closed on the idle gap . for the plus 4 engine and long needle carb ;)

Hi Monty,
Well my plus 21-4C finally workup this past Friday night! Took the above settings from the “bench to the track” and she ran great! Turned my fastest lap times to date! Even my buddies made comment how strong the engine was. The run times were great as well! I would guess close to 10 minutes. I am currently using the 9901/41021 pipe set. What would you recommend take it up a notch? A couple of the Novarossi guys said a Dynamite 053 would liven things up on the top a bit? Your recommendation would be? Thanks for your help and patience!!

I think the Toro would be fine in Buggy...doesn't seem anywhere near crazy power to me....nice smooth power and easy to drive IMO.....Nova's are nice and smooth and i honestly don't think any of them offer "crazy"power unless you step into their onroad lineup.....This isn't a knock against Nova by any means, but if someone was looking for over the top insane i would not consider any of the Nova's myself.... A good tractable efficient race engine YES, a crazy blow by everyone else engine NO......I watched a buddy with a toro team edition in a buggy today and to me the engine seemed excellent in the buggy and was by no means overpowered...Looked very controllable and quite fast....

hello!
i got a +4 team thats got about 1 and ˝ gallon on it. I'w read that it's recommended to change the rod after about 4gallons. Should i change the bearings then too or will those last longer?

casevac 07-05-2010 11:58 AM

The factory settings of the P5 says HSN 3,5 and LSN 5. With 5 turns on the LSN its allmoust unscrewed.
Silly me didnt count turns when I screwed it in, so now im kinda lost.
Im pretty sure it wount run great or even start at all withe the way to rich LSN settings.

How do you run yours? Im pretty close to start race tuning, but I want it "slightly rich" to start of with.

Newbie Nitro questions.

What type of tool if there is one is used to measure Idle gap? I believe i have a lean LSN with too much idle gap. Like described in your very first post but I dont know how to measure this Idle gap. Sorry for silly questions.... Everyone has to start somewhere. I've been in 1/8 nitro about a month...

Also any beginner tricks of the trade you could share? Any fundamental basics i should know. Not asking for a 2 page post, i'm intelligent. Just some brief answers. Thanks!

I've read 90% of the posts on tuning and watched every video i can find. I've been trying to do the homework(not lazy) just not knowledgeable on the subject matter.

Modded N21R ran very nice thru morning and untill steering servo went bad after 2nd qualifier. No problems with engine and ran with very good controlable power. Today added 0.1mm shim, ran 9853/41021 , hot plug, steady 250F temps. Plan to replace steering servo before Thursday night practice and race again next Sat. Found the power band very steady and comfortable bottom thru top end. End resulted same lap times the D8 with modded N21R as my backup buggy MBX6 + B5/2013 combo. Again, Very steady smoothe running engine:nod: Thanks! Talk again

the best thing to do is pay attention around your local track , find the guy that "actually" knows what he is doing :D there are many at your local tracks that think they know much more than they actually know and it doesnt take too long to figure what they are about ;) ask the knowledgeable guy for some good , honest help , show him you understand the answers to the questions you posed and he will turn into your mentor  trust me ;)

thats what im talking about, driven right it looks <from vid> that im gonna pull the trigger on this sucker, just that machined piston, i know its gonna be sweet in the longrun, but goddam it takes a good 2 gallons to break in,and still not FULLY seated...if i can get at least a gallon run thru on a bench before i get, ill take one asap, :)

you want a toro team with R2R ? 60$ for 1/2 gallon , 100$ for 1 full gallon , it takes a lot of time to run the engines in , i do it in a car  , that way the engines are already tuned (very close) when customers receive them

TommyBlazin 07-05-2010 09:26 PM

yea id have to do a gallon, a half wont be anything for that machined, i will STILL have to throw a gallon thru her...hey off topic, can u get me a box of those goodies, i cant find anywhere, walmart doesnt have around here, can u do me that solid, also when i reposition the high spoeed needle, move it, those 2 washers that came with motor are to be installed as i tighten into new postion/ i lost one, didnt know what they were for at first read the manual and than saw ...will it leak if i didnt install those?

Yup, thats the one, read something about 3,5 and 4,25 and 1mm idle-gap?
Since im scared to overtighten the LSN when screwing it in i think something like 4-4,25 out on the LSN.

Hi Monty

I have an interesting one - I finally tried a 6.0mm restrictor on my ToroNero from 6.5mm... I retuned (to the best of my tuning abilities, ie not greatly I have to say), ie mostly leaning the HSN (a tiny bit).... and the dang thing keeps stalling, completely inpredictably but mostly off-throttle or on partial throttle...

Put the 6.5mm restrictor back in and it works fine.

Suggestions?

Thanks!
Paul

Open the idle up more. When you put the 6.0 in you closed the idle gap.

I tried the 6.0 myself and had the same issue and after talking to Monty he said only a handfull of people a can tune it right. He said the tune has to pretty close to spot on. I went back to the 6.5 myself and motor runs like a top.

Lonestar 07-06-2010 07:50 AM

Thanks all :)

Actually i DID crank the idle up too, that one was an obvious one so I forgot to mention... maybe I just didn't do it enough.... mmmh...

regarding the difficulty of tuning with a 6.0mm insert, yes, I figured that out haha However I'm struggling to understand what is *so* different in the process that when you chop 8% of the opening it makes the thing so difficult... mmmh...

Paul

Does anyone know if a P5 head and head buttom will work on a n21bf(the black head one)?
