William.. it seems the 086 is the golden boy for these engines. I was told not to run the 007HT w/ the 5-port but I'm going to anyway for a while, if I absolutely don't like it or can't tune it I'll buy a 086 or 053. The Dynamites are nice though, well built and cheap. |
Temp guns
For an experienced racer a temp gun is not needed. I can usually tell within 10 degree's how hot my engine is running just by how it feels. A new racer has no idea, could be 150 deg. could be 300 deg. what does he have it to compare to? I would recommend to a new racer to use a temp gun and use it often, it wont hurt anything. Most races we go to you have 2-3 minute warmup for a 30-45 minute main. It is quite a guessing game to figure out just the right tune to get that extra fuel mileage etc. Using a temp gun in qualifying to see what it temps after warmup vs. after the heat race gives a good baseline of what it might do in the main. I would agree a temp gun would be for the uninitiated, or for communication purposes just so that both people are speaking the same language, but from a tuners point of view, with time and experience most people just need that added reassurance that everything is in check.
I still do it from time to time mainly for breakins but race level it goes by hear and sound and performance. |
Thanks for the info on the pipes, when they arrive i will put the 053 on there and see what mileage there is. technically the pipe is a 053.5 (made up number) since last time racing in austin it got this wonderful dent in the side of it about an inch behind the stinger. if this doesnt work too well i will splurge on the 086.
Hmm i wonder how the trinity big boy pipe would do on this mill? the pipe promises alot and i have this curiosity about it, with it being so very different and all. |
My new GO 5-port blew the motors in my starter box. I'm not sure what to do with it now. I don't want to blow through a couple more starter box motors. What can I do to get this started. I can barely get it to turn with the plug out, and with the plug in forget it. I ran it on the box for a bit with fuel lubing it, but I never had a chance to fire it. Not really sure where to go from here...... Should I leave it at TDC for a few more days, perhaps put it in the oven at 225 or so a few times heat cycling it? I did use a heat gun tonight as well, I heated the motor to ~215 degrees. Now I see why it will need a new rod in gallons.

Can anyone tell me What aftermarket head will fit the go motors ?
I have a go 5pt. Thanks |

I always just fire it up, I don't run it with fuel first. Which starter box are you using? Hands down the Ofna truggy box is the best. I am now offering bench break in service. Break in prices $20.00 on new modded motors I sell $30.00 on new motors I sell $40.00 for any other motor I figure it's kind of like painting bodies. Not really making much for the time it takes. Running a stock 7 Port with the factory 8mm plastic restrictor and 053 pipe I am guessing around 7 to 7.30 tops ?? Depends on the track and how heavy you are on the gas. If its a newish motor that still has lots of pinch 6 to 7 ?? A broken in 7 Port with 6.5 mm restrictor, 0801 pipe and a smooth throttle finger will do 9 min, maybe more. Reduce the epa to 60 % and shim the head as MMods suggests in his recent post, and you should be able to get 10 + no problem. |

And before you bump it make sure the piston is at BDC so it has some momentum when it reaches the pinch. |

Try getting it up around 240, also might help to put a little fuel in the sleeve (through the head) for some lubrication. When I use my heat gun I don't point it down in the head I aim it right where the head meets the case, doesn't matter how hot you get the head, you need the heat in the case where the pinch is.

+1, take your time and heat the hell out of it, don't hesitate to hit 240 or 250 on the first few cycle's, if your using a box it is vital to hit this heat range for breakin, the extra heat will save the rod in the long run, just keep the heat on it the entire time, and the rod will last for a good while, i have seen they have gone back to the old style version rod which is awesome, if i can be of any more help feel free to give me a call, they are tricky at first, but one you get it on the ground and get some of the pinch out, it get;s better.

Brian (and those who replied) thanks! I'll keep trying, now I've got to wait for my Amain order of starter motors to show up. I realize a chrome top with a single big motor would help but I really like my Losi box, I hear there are some upgraded HD motors that will fit in it. Back on topic. I was heating the engine up but perhaps I heat it even more. I've heard the tricks of spinning the motor with oil in it with a drill off the clutch nut and stuff like that. Honestly, I think I'll just try heating it up more. If I ever buy another Go (I say that because I'm going most electric now) I'll definitely get a break-in package with it! Brian.. I may ring you later today to chat about the Go. And if anyone has Yahoo/AIM send me a message, you can click on the icons next to my name.
one thing i have seen around here is putting the stock emaxx motors into the starter box. |
