I think 550 is a good price point for a car that doesn't need a bunch of parts. Even my NT1's get a heap of option parts, I just built a new kit with brass engine mount and about 10 other things. The mugen comes with weights and everything else. Maybe more weight is needed but it would get you close. No different brake pads, no pad springs, no $100 dollar clutch set(hd clutch) , No plastic diff gears to source. I think it's on track with the cap car for options and even easier to work on. Brilliant really. Add to that that from the pictures it looks like you need a fair bit of weight to ballast up to min weight.

I must be insane, cause the prices where I am are looking good lately to me...

What I'd like to see though is numbers pick up, on-road nitro has been in a slump here for some time. :(
(Hopefully though there will be a horde of MTX5 pilots out there soon though.)

Alloy parts are cheaper to make than plastic parts from what i hear. The cost of machining a vacuum mould plastic part is more exxy than CNC'ing an alloy part. It's also cheaper if future revisions to the design need to be made as no new vacuum mould needs to be produced.

carbon fibre (especially the simple quality in rc cars) can't be that expensive these days...i doubt it anyway. The kit is no more advanced (in it's parts) as a mtx3 or 4. I mean there isn't any high tech plastic being used, or super special rare metal, it's all basic material which is available quite easily from any major manufacturer.

i agree, $550 Aussie/USA is a fair price.

short production runs are relatively cheap to make on cnc. The tooling cost for making a mold is pretty insane, however the material (plastic resin) is cheaper so long term production in large numbers is cheaper. Also the tool wear in the long run makes CNC Al parts more expensive long term added to the record aluminum prices (no cnc router bits to wear out)

Carbide tools last a lot longer than you think on aluminum. Trust me, making the aluminum parts is cheaper(way) than making the plastic injection molds. Ive been in both businesses, I would know.

Don't forget you also have to pay for design and development. With the 3 and 4, we were just paying Sonada, now we have to pay Sonada AND Pietsch. :D

Considering what a hot streak Pietsch is on as a designer going back to Shepherd, I say it's still a good deal.

choisan 08-23-2011 04:23 AM

and the inflation of japanese currency and deflation of US dollar.

I think his name is Koji Sanada.

I question the idea the alloy is cheaper to produce than the plastics, theories or not, when a replacement plastic bulkhead is costing $12, and the alloy more like $45, where is that theory holding water then?.

Look at all the electric cars, switch to alloy and carbon and the prices went through the roof, we are seeing the nitro cars not do the same (if you ignore Capricorn), but you can't avoid that the prices of the newer alloy parts 'are' more expensive, so someone has it wrong somewhere.

Material cost and production cost different??

Steve I was talking about runs in the millions of pieces range, like long term production. If that's wrong they need to start teaching different things at Oregon State University's Mechanical Engineering program... on a side note, are you guys going to the xray race at speedworld?

Don't worry, you aren't mistaken. Although, millions of pieces might be a little too high . Millions are for the companies that have very small margin of profit per piece produced.

CNC vs Plastic Moulding comes down to the quantities the company is looking to sell.

Plastic Molding has a high initial cost to a company due to the molds. But if they are going to stick with the same mold over several years, it pays off. Example: if you look at the MTX-4, do you think the arms, uprights and bulkheads did not pay-off after such a long run with the same car??

CNC has a lower initial cost, and the cost of the materials are passed on to the racer. So it's a win-win for the company, not so much for the racers.

On another note, CNC gives the company the ability to change their design without having yet another molding cost. Just look at how many times Serpent has redesigned their 733 rear bulkheads, I just lost track of it.
