You don't need to grind to much away on top. Just hit the edge that the pinion will start to touch. You don't need a pinion larger than 50 maybe 51 with a 74 spur. No top deck needed. Ask Jay at speedworld. Sometimes he actually knows something.

With shims under top deck you can use even bigger than 50T pinions.
The winner of TITC 2017 in non-bust class has used on his A700 the 52T pinion with 70T spur ( FDR 2,8 ).

Any brand 6x3mm round shims of the desirable thickness.
Awesomatix offers 0,5mm, 1mm, 1,75mm thickness shims.
