Our current 1:10 F1 chassis have always seemed a bit short to me. I can tell especially when I've got a bunch of 1:18 diecast F1 cars to compare it to. Full scale F1 cars have wheelbases from 3300-3500mm, so scaled down should be 330-350mm. Just for comparison, an F104 wheelbase is 270mm. Even the FGX which is a bit on the long side is "only" 280mm.

Again, it isn't super noticeable, until you see a scale model next to it. Besides, anything with that long of a wheelbase would be tough to drive around a tight indoor carpet track.

But with 2000mm wide cars for 2017, the length and width proportions get a little closer to our 1:10 cars. Although technically, the cars are closer to a 1:11-1:12 scale F1.

Real F1 cars are very long, but it's normally only obvious from above. Even Tamiya's F103L would be considered short, it had a wheelbase of 280mm, and was quite lazy changing direction compared to an F103 (in my experience).

If we had more Euro style tracks with flow... then we could run longer cars but point-n-shoot like most tracks are would be a struggle.

ScottT,
I saw your numbers and thought that they were inaccurate. Did some research and found that the wheelbase of 2015 and 2016 cars averaged about 3500mm, which is 350cm, which means 35cm in 1/10 scale. Converted to imperial measurements, that's about 13.8". In other words, ScottT is correct and our cars are short.

The 1:1 F1 cars have grown considerably longer since the introduction of the hybrid power unit in 2014 (so long that they look like school buses to me). The teams have to package a lot of equipment inside the chassis now, and the only way to fit everything was to extend the wheelbase.

When I compare photos of the 1:1 McLaren MP4-24 (which is the body/wing set currently on my F104) they look pretty similar lengthwise.

http://www.f1technical.net/f1db/cars/873/ferrari-f2004

Back to 2004, the Ferrari is listed as having a wheelbase of 3050mm (305cm). In 1/10 scale, that's 305mm or right at 12". If I recall correctly, the F104 has about a 279mm wheelbase.

Sorry in advance for the long post but its how I roll

Its hard to be 100% certain but from what I've read they immediately started growing longer in 2010 after the re-banning of in-race refueling. 2010 cars were between 300mm and 1000mm (depending on the car) longer than 2009 cars. 2016 cars are out to over 5000mm in length. Its hard to pinpoint a single reason why - possibly to house some of the ERS-K but cars have been required to be designed to have some form of KERS since 2009. The longer floor does help recover down force possibly lost by other rule changes and also probably decreases the adverse effect of a full fuel load.

Its a bit hard to be precise because wheelbase is not mandated but overhangs are (and even then the front one has a 200mm difference between min and max) which puts the current cars somewhere between 3300 and 3500mm actual wheelbase. Most information sources are of the opinion that most F1 chassis are of similar wheelbase.

All that being said your MP24-4 in 1:1, even if it was a bit shorter than most of its rivals (which supposedly led to its woeful handling), and using the Ferrari info as a guide, was still around 3000mm wheelbase which, in 1/10 scale =300mm, is still noticeably longer than the F104's 1/10 279mm.

*Dimensions estimated based information available on f1technical.net and wikipedia

Interesting that you guys bring up the 2017 rules just as I recently acquired a TRF101W. I bought some nice wide Shimizu F103 wheels and tires and the full Protoform Fifteen body and aero... going to try to make my version of a 2017 scale car.

Sneeky,
Please post pics. I don't know if it will happen, but I'd love to see "wide" cars allowed in F1 r/c again.
