The big question is how serious do you want to get? If you just want to run the spec tcs classes, then the tt01 is just fine. For serious racing in like the gt2 or 3 classes, I would say the TB-02 would be better because it's more of a race bread machine.

This is off of the Tamiya USA site...directly answers many questions:
The TB-02R Chassis Kit was developed with the goal of providing an affordable chassis that still had the power to achieve top ranking finishes in Tamiya Grand Prix. Using the basic design of the TB Evolution III gearbox, we have applied the minimum amount of tuning to achieve a versatile and reliable new chassis. The TB-02R is fully adaptable with a wide variety of optional parts, expanding its potential to compete against even the fastest high-end machines.
New Parts
- Uses front and rear upper braces, (bathtub frame is connected by two 2mm carbon plates, strengthening torsional rigidity and lightening weight).
- Uses 2mm thick carbon battery plate, with “TB-02R” mark.
Standard Features
The TB-02R chassis comes with the following items and features:
Lightweight reversible suspension. (same one used in 415MS and TB EVO 4 kits)
Full ball bearings.
universal swing shafts
front and rear carbon plate chassis stiffeners.
Front and rear stabilizers (medium hardness).
Aluminum motor heat sink (blue).
Lightweight propeller shaft (blue).
Tires are a combination of medium narrow type A and molded inner type S.
Medium TRF damper spring.
Aluminum wheel nuts (blue).
Body, motor and pinion not included.

I don't know really how serious I'll get into the hobby. I definitely like going to the local LHS and watching the races and I'm into tweaking/fixing things up. As a kid, I used to put together model planes and cars. I have most of the hop-ups already on my M-04L. Its too bad I've got no one to race around here and winter is dragging. I've only run this thing once out in our cul-de-sac.
I probably won't have much time to race. At most once a month. I definitely want to put my money into something that will be competitive, upgradeable and durable.
On the same note, is the TB-02R the same as a TB-02 with the Tamiya Conversion Parts Blue for the TB Evo III?

I have both the TT01 & TB02. The TB02 is in my opinion the far superior car. The TT01 has serious durability issues with the steering knuckles as well as the chasis. The TB02 is more tuner friendly and has many more hop up options. Just the gearing options alone make the TB02 the better car. I see the TT01 as a toy that can be converted into a low end racer. I see the TB02 as an excellent mid level racer that can also double as a parking lot fun car.

careful with the TB-02... once you get into faster racing (stock 27T and up)... you'll start to munch gears on the TB-02. the main problem i had this past TCS was the shaft TWISTING inside the bevel gear.
i solved the problem of one way gears stripping...and bevel gears stripping. now the shaft is starting to spin and strip the inside of the bevel gear.
for the main... CA that sucker and my car was very LOUD!
btw... TT-01 will cost you about $410 USD total when/if you buy ALL the hopups. (TCS legal i mean)

Thanks for the heads up on the TB-02 stripping. I'm going to Southeast Asia in May for a little vacation. I heard RCs are cheaper over there.. I'm hoping to pick up a kit over there for cheap. So far, it looks like its gonna be the TB-02. If the TB-02R is around $150 American, I'll pick that up instead. Just got my tax refund. Yahoo!!!! Divert some of it for a new car!!!!
