Since we're still talking about diffs....I've posted this one before. It's from ruebiracer (on Tamiyaclub) showing how to modify an M03 chassis to fit a Spec-R gear diff. But, I recall a few months ago, someone showed how to fit the TOP Racing diff without modifying the chassis. Does anyone remember who that was?
I believe it involved removing the bearing carriers on the diff completely and running the standard 1150 bearing directly on the outdrives. Ring any bells? Pretty sure if I search for "top" or "diff" in this thread, I'd regret it. I really wish this site allowed for Boolean searches. If it can wait til tomorrow night when I report in I'll look around and see if I can find it. Unless someone on here beats me to the punch Monk! |
If it wasn't such as pita to crack open the Tamiya in half to access the diff I would pop one in my M03 for you to see. I have a couple of those TOP ball and gear diffs for my SabreFD mini lying around being lazy.

After sending the above post, I remembered that I kept my old M03 chassis in my parts bin. If I don't get called into meetings later tonight, I will pop one in (TOP Racing diff) and take a picture for you.

Almost box stock M03M (yellow Suzuki Swift with noodle flag) versus 3 M05 V2's head cam race video. Top 4 cars (similar fast laps) finish on same lap. I'm in view almost the whole time cause I'm racing the guy taking the video (red car).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJPl...ature=youtu.be One of the funniest races I've been in awhile. I think it has everything: - great race announcing - clean racing - how to stuff it on the first lap - consistent fast accident-free driving for the win (white car) - close chasing sizing up passing opportunities - unfortunately 2 bad pass attempts but knowing I screwed up and waiting up for the guy I hacked to get back in front of me - getting passed and using my side door to complete it - multiple passes using an outside in move (full brakes and full lock turn in and pray) - great participation from the crowd - all smiles on the drivers stand after the race I think newer drivers can learn a lot from this video. Also, the key to having a competitive mini in my opinion is steering and corner speed. Normally, in my good M03, I would probably only need to use brakes once into the sweeper after the straight. But with my friction dampers and lack of proper weight transfer, I had to use brakes 6 times per lap so I can slow down enough to turn and counter my massive understeer. Lost time consistently in the same parts of the track cause I couldn't get the timing right but great skills to learn for my modified TC driving. So basically If you can't turn on a dime, tune it till you can or learn to use brakes. Also, you don't need the latest and greatest to have fun. Winning is a different matter. Lol. Ivan |
Ivan, quick dumb question.
How much does the flag effect the stability of your car (side to side motion)? It looks like it acts as some type of vertical wing. That's a really cool Video! |

- will an 1150 bearing it properly on the outdrive? - if the bearing bosses are removed from the gear diff halves, what else is affected? Any sealing surfaces get compromised? |

We all accuse him of cheating using that flag, its an obvious advantage! (he knows I am kidding :)) The flag does nothing, other than reminding us mini is fun :)
some type of vertical stabilizer on the rear of their cars that really really seemed to make their cars handle a lot better than the rest. I'm not saying he's cheating, but maybe he might know a little more than he's telling people! And he might just be onto something special! Has he ever compared the handling of his car without it vs. with it attached? |

Has he ever compared the handling of his car without it vs. with it attached? The key to the prototype stabilizers, is the fact that they are FIXED to keep the flow of air directed square to the car, over the rear wing. They also act like a rudder, so if the car steps out etc, it provides stability against the slide, by pushing the air. In Ivan's case, the flag is not fixed, it flaps in the wind. And it can actually hamper his straight line speed. When its flapping down the straight, it creates drag. So id prefer it if he keeps running it ;) :p |

To add to what I said about the rudder idea and the air, here is an extreme case. The prototypes have the stabilizer in the center so they can turn left and right. When you only plan to turn left, and there are no rules.... you get this.

A pic of my RWD M03. Goes pretty well & I'll be racing it this Wednesday against a RWD M05 which was built using mine as inspiration. Could become a theme at this club !!

One thing you can do is cut small windows in the side of the rear section and flip the servo upside down. that way your links are closer to the same level as the uprights. |

Thanks. The main things to look for are:

Is that gear diff? Looks different from the gear diff pictures Ive found.
